Exterior Overview
The Hilux Surf always gets us excited, and our customers seem equally enthused. It’s hard not to like these rigs, with their incredible turbodiesel powertrains and rugged, center-locked 4×4 underpinnings. This 1996 ‘Yota is a top-of-the-line SSR-G model and is finished in a fresh coat of Cutting Edge Metallic (1L0). Aside from a few light chips and dings the paint is in good nick, and this Toyota is set off by refinished alloys, an optional moonroof deflector, factory spare tire swingarm, aggressive OEM rear spoiler, and sport hood. Fresh off a recent service, this intercooled model boasts a mere 96k verified and documented miles on the clock. Nimble enough to traverse tricky terrain, and versatile enough to ferry the kids to soccer, this Japanese Classic does just about everything well. Safe, efficient, and easy on the eyes, this KZN185 is a surefire bet!
Interior Overview
Improved for its third generation, the Hilux cabin became larger, added safety features, and utilized more premium materials. This SSR-G model features standard dual SRS airbags and ABS brakes. The dashboard is more sculpted than earlier versions and this one lacks any cracking or fading. An optional automatic climate system is equipped and doles out cold A/C and piping hot heat. Below is an Eclipse head unit that supplements the cabin with some tunes. It includes auxiliary input for your smart device too. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support to find the ideal driving position. Power windows, electric mirrors and power locks all work in typical Toyota fashion. It even has a power rear reverse mirror that pops down from the rear spoiler providing a view of the road behind. The seats are in above average shape and upholstered in a moon mist gray cloth. They lack any major tips, stains or tears. The rear row 4 way reclines for optimal back seat comfort and can also tumble forward to accommodate more cargo. The hatch opens up to almost 6 feet, and this surf can swallow a bunch of gear for an outdoor expedition. The rear glass can also be retracted to load items into the boot without opening the hatch. The door cards are in good nick as are the carpets and aside from a hazy field monitor screen, non functional sunroof and a non original headliner it’s really hard to complain about the cabin condition. We also wanted to note the power folding function of the side mirrors has given up the ghost as well. Still at 25 years old this interior has been well maintained and we feel the new American owner will agree.
Mechanical Overview
The Surf’s beauty is more than superficial and this tough body on frame SUV is powered by the legendary 1KZ-TE turbodiesel. This one sports the optional intercooler for some additional punch and this version runs lower EGTs than your standard diesel N180. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3.0L springs to life promptly, care of two new 12v batteries. It sounds tough, and one of our trained techs installed a new catback exhaust to keep it that way! We always replace the fuel filter upon inspection to ensure no contaminants enter the 2992cc mill. We have refreshed the four banger with a brand new valve cover gasket and half moon seal to keep the oil level on full. Thermal management is handled by a brand new radiator which flows fresh coolant. The engine is linked to a stout automatic gearbox that makes good use of the tremendous low end torque provided by the 1K. It shifts properly and is mated to a selectable transfercase. For maximizing fuel economy and acceleration, we recommend cruising in RWD. When a beach run or snow shower is on tap, 4WD can be engaged on the fly. For low traction scenarios, a low range and center locker can be utilized to keep momentum trudging forward. To slow down ABS is standard and the front axles benefit from new pads and rotors. The power steering is direct and communicative for a truck and the suspension can handle the rigors of daily use and abuse. New Falken tires have been mounted and balanced at all four corners and should last for tens of thousands of miles to come. They also quell road noise, too. Turn key and ready to rock, this spacious, reliable, and useful rig just needs a new owner!
