As far as crossovers go, the CR-V was, and still is, Honda's trademark product. The cute, AWD runabouts are frugal, reliable, and boast top-tier interior ergonomics, as you'd expect from this iconic brand. Our recently serviced 1996 is finished in a new coat of Silver White (A62), and aside from some light dings, is in good shape overall. Fresh of a recent service, this special CR-V boasts an incredibly low 42k verified and documented miles and runs like a top! For those looking for a trusty and affordable year-round ride, this unique and practical Honda might just be a perfect fit and is a certified Japanese Classic.
Despite the smaller exterior dimensions, the cabin feels anything but small. Honda did a great job maximizing cargo capacity and passenger space in this model, and it's clear the five seater's interior was cared for in a prior life. The view of the road is unobstructed and commanding as this crossover rides much taller than its sedan stablemates, the Accord or Civic. The dash lacks any cracking or distortion and was designed with a handy storage bin on the passenger side above the glovebox. A simple-to-use auto climate control system is mounted below the Eclipse audio upgrade. Both work as advertised and make daily use enjoyable. The driver also benefits from an adjustable steering column and electric windows, locks, and mirrors. These work like a charm too, as you'd expect, because it's a Honda. The gray upholstery is in above average condition and lacks any rips, stains, or tears. The carpets, headliner, and door cards have avoided major abuse over the years and have held up well. We love the little touches, like the OEM picnic table and the foldable tray table found between the driver and passenger seats. Other than the smell of smoke and the power-folding function of the side mirrors being inoperable, it's really hard to complain about the cabin. We have even included the original Japanese owner's manuals and some service records, too for the new buyer!
The drivetrain is a real gem, and Honda built these CR-Vs to stand the test of time. Powered by the B20B, this CUV is fresh off an oil and filter service. The four-banger cranks over promptly thanks to a new 12v battery and idles with confidence. A new thermostat ensures she gets up to and maintains, proper engine temps so that the heat can be utilized for this time of year. The 2.0L is mated to a slick-shifting automatic gearbox and a capable AWD system. Power is adequate for daily use and getting up to highway speeds. The peppy little hauler sips fuel compared to our larger trucks which lower its cost of ownership significantly these days, while prices at the pumps are surging. One of our trained techs has refreshed the suspension with new rear sway bar end links and a new set of inner and outer tie rods. Couple those with a fresh alignment and the CR-V feels predictable and confident on the road. The same can be said for the brakes which do a great job of slowing this little Honda down from higher speeds. To complete the list of reconditioning items we mounted and balanced four new tires at each of the corners, and the spare too. The new all-season rubber quiets down the road noise a fair amount and will deliver tens of thousands of miles of premium year-round grip to come.
