Toyota diehards get excited because this is a very special 1996 Hilux Surf. Packing a hearty 3.4L gas V6, stunning Recaro interior, and underpinned by a rugged 4WD system, you can't beat this rig for the money. Accessorized by a subtle factory brush guard and set of OEM rain guards, the exterior is finished in Toyota's understated (1A5) Desert Dune Metallic and is in fantastic condition for what appears to be original paint. The body is in good shape too other than some very minor dings and scuffs associated with normal use over the last 25 years. Boasting only 57k documented original miles, this truck has been recently serviced and legally imported, and is a turn-key Japanese Classic.

The cabin is spacious, logically designed, and full of power features. In overall outstanding well cared for condition, the interior is hard to beat with the factory Recaro seating. The dash is in good nick and lacks any cracking or major UV damage. Unlike the second-generation Hilux Surf this one is equipped with dual SRS front airbags. Above your head in front of the sunroof is a digital compass and gauge suite that normally reads temperature and barometric pressure, however is no longer operational in this truck. A power-retractable sunroof roof is there to provide additional light and ventilation and both retracts and tilts as it should. Even the OEM wind guard on the sunroof is intact. An adjustable steering column, power windows, locks, and mirrors make for a convenient daily driving experience, and for parking, the driver can select a power retractable parking mirror to retract from the rear spoiler downwards to see what's directly behind their bumper. The highlight of the cabin is obviously the Recaro seats and door cards. Both are in above-average shape and do not have any major rips, stains, or tears. They are wonderfully supportive and set off the cabin perfectly. The OEM audio was ditched for an improved JVC unit and it even has auxiliary inputs. Next to an OEM 12v wall charger mounted in the cargo area a Maverick subwoofer and enclosure add some base to your selected soundtrack. The rear seats fold all the way forward to maximize cargo area and the rear window powers down in case you have some 2x4s that are a bit long. Rear privacy tint works to keep the interior temps down during the summertime but the automatic climate system does work just fine in case you wanted to use the A/C on those hot summer days. The carpets and headliner look good besides some carpet wear behind the driver's seat and the interior plastics have held up well over the years. It's obvious that this one was babied overseas in a prior life.

These drivetrains are some of the longest-lasting and most reliable units Toyota ever built. Conveniently the 5VZ-FE was sold here in our US 4Runers so parts are readily available and easy to source/ The 3.4L V6 is fresh off an oil and filter service and has also received a new 12v battery that should last for the next four to five years. The engine starts up promptly and feeds power to a slick-shifting automatic gearbox. The selective transfer case has options for 2WD and 4WD with low gearing. If the going gets tough a center locking differential can assist to get you out of the muck. New Falken all-terrain rubber sits at all four corners plus the spare so all are matching, new, and deliver premium grip on loose surfaces. The brakes feel confident and the factory TEMS adjustable suspension is compliant for daily driving. This Hilux Surf is one special model because of its stellar options, great condition, and ease of ownership. Collectible, capable, and cool this rig is a sure-fire Japanese Classic.
