It seems to us that the definition of a "sport utility" has evolved over the years. Nowadays, tall sedans masquerade around as SUVs but at Japanese Classics, we only sell the real deal. Take this body on frame 1996 Hilux Surf. It packs a wallop thanks to a torquey diesel and can transport you nearly anywhere with its center locking differential and four-wheel drive. This SSR-X package is fresh off a recent service and offered with a mere 151k verified and documented miles. Finished in an Evergreen Pearl over Silver two-tone, the body is in good shape aside from the normal dings, chips, and scuffs associated with normal use. Prior repairs in Japan included a replacement rear hatch and passenger side fender at some point in this truck's life. OEM rainguards compliment the large factory IPF fog lamps, and this safe and reliable truck includes a few upgrades, too. For those who want a tough, capable, efficient and safe hauler that can actually get it done when it counts most, this KZN185 is just what the doctor ordered!

The cabin is spacious and nicely appointed. Unlike older Hilux's these 180 generation trucks have standard dual front SRS airbags. Power equipment surrounds the driver and functional electric windows, locks, and mirrors make daily use enjoyable. The optional power-retractable sunroof sits atop the roof for added ventilation and natural light. A rare OEM tinted sunroof visor with integrated foil adds a bit of flair and cuts down on wind buffeting. The switchgear is all at hand which is easy to read and located by the dome light is a field monitor. The driver can keep an eye on the direction of travel, barometric pressure and outside temperature when piloting this Toyota. Automatic climate control is on hand for cold A/C and piping hot heat for the winter ahead. The center stack also includes pull-out cupholders and a Kenwood head unit upgrade. Additional storage can be found in a center console as well as a large glovebox. Currently inside are the Japanese manuals which should give the next owner a giggle! The gray upholstery is durable and lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. Long journeys can be had in comfort as the driver receives an adjustable steering column and a manual lumbar adjustment. The rear seats also have several recline settings and fold flat into a seating surface. Aside from some light stains, the carpet is in good nick, as are the door cards and headliner. It's obvious the car was cared for in a prior life and aside from some light adhesive, a scuff on the dash, and a missing clock, it's really hard to complain about the interior!

Under the skin is just as beautiful as the outside and this truck exudes machismo. Twist the key and you'll hear the burble of the 1KZ-TE turbo diesel. A fresh oil and filter service and new 12v battery give this Surf a good head start on its new American life. The 3.0L idles with confidence and is connected to a slick-shifting automatic gearbox. Power is sent to two or four wheels depending on the driver's preference. For inclement weather, sand and loose surfaces low gearing and a locking center differential are available. The suspension is compliant and capable of handling the rigors of daily use and abuse. The brakes are confident and the power steering is nicely weighted and communicative for a truck. The alloys are all wrapped in new all-terrain Falken tires that will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
