This 1996 Hilux Surf is an eye-catching truck. Its beauty runs more than skin deep and the secret to this model's legendary longevity is its diesel powerplant and capable 4WD system. Finished in a subtle Light Blue Pearl Metallic over Silver Two-Tone (8L6) the paint looks fantastic and is offered with a mere 130k verified miles. Updated by privacy tint, OEM brush guard, rain guards, and a rugged set of brand new Falken tires allude to the fact that this rig is all business! The body is in good shape other than some typical minor door dings, scuffs, and chips that you'd expect with a used vehicle. The interior has plenty of space for five and tons of power accessories. Legally imported and recently serviced, this Toyota 4x4 is a reliable, refined, and fun-to-drive Japanese Classic SUV.

The cabin represents a massive upgrade and departure over the second-generation Hilux Surf. The materials that were chosen for the cabin have lasted longer, and are more premium in their feel and look. Even dual SRS airbags come as standard equipment and this car utilized a modern crash structure underneath the bodywork. The view of the road ahead is commanding and clear and a trick gauge suite sits atop the windshield and displays the direction of travel, altitude, temperature, and barometric pressure. It works as it should like most 25-year-old Toyota electronics. The dash is in good shape and lacks any cracks or distortion which is a common problem on older vehicles. An OEM audio system, digital climate control, and even a set of cupholders are included in the center stack. The audio quality is impressive for a vehicle of this age and the A/C system blows cold. The SSR-G has plenty of bells and whistles that more lightly trimmed models don't get. Our favorite is the power rear parking mirror which slides out of the spoiler with the press of a button so that you can see the Hilux's rear bumper whilst parking. Power folding mirrors, electric locks, and power windows all work as they should and make daily driving so much more convenient. Even the power rear window retracts so that you can add some additional natural ventilation throughout the cabin. The seats are upholstered in a durable blue cloth that is textured like corduroy. These seats provide blissful bolstering and lack and major rips, satin, or tears. The rear seats fold completely flat for those who require additional storage capacity. The headliners, door cards, and carpets all have fared well over the years and it's obvious this car was cared for in Japan. Lastly, we wanted to note the OEM mesh cargo divider which isn't terribly effective but damn does it ooze authenticity!

Real off-road diehards understand why this KZN185 is so desired; it's nearly indestructible and about as capable as any civilian four-wheeled vehicle you can buy. This SUV is powered by a brutish 3.0L 1KZ-TE turbodiesel. Fresh off an oil and filter service, two new 12v batteries aid startup and should last for at least four years to come. This large four-banger sounds fantastic and breaths a bit better thanks to a new engine air filter. Torque is fed through a selective 4WD system that includes a center locking differential if the road conditions turn apocalyptic. The automatic gearbox is seamless in its operation and makes great use of this engine's broad torque curve. It never struggles to get up to highway speeds and is more efficient than its gasoline counterpart. The TEMS adjustable factory suspension is tough enough to handle the rigors of daily use and the power steering is nicely weighted and communicative. This heavyweight SUV brakes much better now as our technicians have installed a new set of front brake pads and rotors. The OEM split three-spoke alloy wheels are wrapped in new Falken All-Terrain tires at all four corners and a matching new spare tire as well! These should last for years to come and provide plenty of all-season grip on all types of surfaces.
