This 1996 Hilux Surf is a determined little diesel SUV. It also has a matching exterior, with its one-off Matte Black paint and aggressive rear spoiler, retro graphics, and stylish 16" MJL Extreme Wheels. Aside from a few dings, non matching door jambs, and light striping on the hood, the body is in good shape and this rig is fresh off a recent service. Having logged a mere 72k verified and documented miles, this baby is barely broken in. Reliable, efficient, and capable of year-round use thanks to its impressive 4x4 driveline, this Japanese Classic is turn-key ready to roll. Enthusiasts, adventurers, and families all love these terrific Toyotas, and its easy to see why!

The cabin is spacious, comes with a few upgrades and was cared ror in Japan. The leather fitted seat covers steal the show, protect the seats below, and add a lot of upmarket panache. Another nice touch is the Panasonic Bluetoooth touchscreen radio upgrade which fills the cabin with sound at a moments notice. Dual SRS airbags are standard and the dashboard lacks any cracking or distortion. The automatic climate control includes functional A/C and rear occupants have their own heating system. Other neat options are the power backup mirror that unfurls from the spoiler to provide a view of the vehicles behind you. An optional field monitor displays the direction of travel, barometric pressure and exterior temperature to the driver from its location by the map lights, The driver benefits from a tilt steering column and adjustable lumbar support. Power folding mirrors, power windows and power locks make daily use even more enjoyable and work in typical Toyota fashion. Even the rear glass powers down for an extra added breeze. The headliner, door cards, and carpets are in fine nick and have withstood the past twenty five years without sustaining major abuse. It even has the owners manuals and maintenance booklets on hand, resting in the glovebox for the new American owner to enjoy!

The Surf shares the same frame and body as our US 4Runners, so upgrades and maintenance items are as cheap as can be. Known for its near bulletproof reliability, the N185 generation also made advancement is safety and on road civility. The legendary powerplant under the hood is one of Toyota's best, the 1KZ-TE. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3.0L cranks to life care of two new 12v batteries. While it was up on the lift, we also replaced the fuel filter and serpentine belts so that the electronics will be properly powered. The four banger created loads of torque and is mated to a smooth shifting automatic gearbox. Acceleration is impressive for an older sport utility vehicle and these Hiluxes are comfortable cruising at sustained highway speeds for long durations. For top tier fuel economy 2WD is best, and if you run into a dusting of snow or sleet, the driver can engage 4WD on the fly. The selective transfercase benefits from a new front output seal and is intuitive to operate. For low traction situations, a center locker can be engaged as can a low range. These rigs eat Jeeps for lunch on the beach, and the light curb weight and large contact patches make for quick work on loose surfaces. The suspension, which was revised to a multilink setup for this generation, is better on pavement than its predecessor. We refreshed the drivetrain heavily with new shocks at each of the four corners. We didn't stop there and also replaced the front lower control arms and front lower balljoints. The Surf has a more premium road feel now and one or our trained techs also installed new inner front tie rods and new sway bar endlinks. The power steering is on point thanks to a fresh alignment and the ABS brakes are responsive with new front brake lines we replaced. Lastly new 31" Falken tires were mounted and balanced. They match the tough guy aesthetic and most importantly will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
