To the stateside Toyota enthusiast, this Hilux Surf may look no different than your standard fare 4Runners still plodding around our US highways and byways. Under the skin, this 1996 SSR-X is a completely different beast, boasting a responsive turbodiesel drivetrain, center locking differential, and mileage and condition far better than anything you'd see on your standard used car lot. Finished in Stellar Blue (8L7) this Surf is accented by chrome fender garnishes, a rear hatch spoiler, and a sexy set of 16" Weds Adventure alloys shod in new beefy Falken A/T rubber. With only 148k verified/documented miles on the clock, this one is likely to outlive its next owner and is fresh off a recent service as well! For those who appreciate a well put together truck, this Japanese Classic Surf is the ticket!

Much like the exterior, the interior on this super Surf has withstood the past 27 years without undergoing any major use or abuse. In fact, it's safe to say this one was well cared for in a prior life, as all the interior upholstery has remained in great shape down to the durable "moon mist" cloth on the seats. The dash is no different, with no pesky UV damage or typical age related distortion to be found. The lower dash trim is finished in a complementary gloss black, housing a simple to use climate control system with an adjacent Pioneer audio upgrade. The sound quality is above average, and some US frequencies are even attainable if you need to turn into your favorite morning talk show. A true all weather truck requires both Cold A/C and hot heat for comfortable daily driving, and luckily this Surf has both. The driver benefits from a tilt adjustable steering column, and dual SRS airbags are at the ready for your partner to ride safely up front. Power windows, locks, and mirrors work like a charm, and functional keyless entry saves your door locks from any unnecessary wear and tear. The rear bench reclines slightly if your passengers need to take a quick snooze, and they can also fold fully forward for any serious hauling needs. Overall, there's not much to turn your nose up at with this interior. Sure there's a couple stains in the headliner and a tear in the driver's footwell, but that does little to take away from this cockpit's appeal. We've even included the factory owner's manual, a telltale sign this one was well cared for in a prior life.

Under the hood, the aforementioned 1KZ-TE is the main draw of this truck, as it's far superior from the powerplants offered here stateside. Ours is fresh off a new engine air filter and oil and filter service, and the fuel filter was replaced as well to maintain a clean flow of diesel into the engine. To protect the turbodiesel four banger against any unwanted leaks or seeps, a new valve cover gasket and half moon seals were installed, and all new serpentine belts keep the accessories driven with ease. With the maintenance performed, this one is a hoot to drive. The turbo spools up with ease for light to light sprints, and the 3.0 can hold its own under sustained highway driving as well. The transmission shifts smoothly, and the selective transfer case can easily drop into 4wd low if you decide to take this one off-roading or on a beach excursion. We even resealed the rear differential as a preventative measure, and new inner and outer tie rods were installed to get the drivetrain into compliance. ABS braking is confident, as we've replaced the pads and rotors up front, and fresh Falken rubber was mounted on all four corners to ensure you'll have no issues with starting or stopping on any surfaces!
