It's hard to think of a midsize SUV that checks more boxes than the third-generation Hilux Surf. It's no wonder these Surfs are one of our favorite vehicles to import, service, and most importantly drive! This 1996 is a prime example, donning a powerful 3.4 V6 under the hood and mated to a slick-shifting automatic transmission. With only 79k verified/documented miles on the clock this is one superbly low mileage example you won't want to miss out on! The Cadet Blue (449) paint references Toyota's prolific FJ40, and is in good overall nick, with only some light chips and dings present from day-to-day use. A few subtle exterior touches set this one apart from your run-of-the-mill 4Runner, namely a factory rear spoiler with power rear under mirror, and a fresh set of refinished factory alloys, to boot. The interior is plenty spacious and can comfortably transport 5 passengers with room to spare in the back! For those passionate about safety, dual SRS airbags are a welcome addition to the cabin and provide some peace of mind for anyone behind the wheel. The seats are trimmed in a corduroy-esque striped blue cloth, and show no defects other than a minor repair to the driver's seat bolster and light staining associated with normal use. It's clear the previous owner took pride in this Surf's interior as all materials show well overall, from the door cards all the way to the dash, where the material shows no signs of cracking, peeling, or distortion. The tortoise patterned lower trim is clean and houses a Pioneer audio upgrade, and a fully functioning automatic climate control unit with hot heat and cold A/C ready to accommodate drivers in all climates. Power windows, door locks, power mirrors, and a power moonroof are all fully operable and work at the push of a button, and the rear glass even unfurls to allow for some more ventilation to flow throughout the cabin. Under the hood lies Toyota's prized 5VZ-FE V6. Known throughout enthusiast circles as being ferociously reliable, powerful, and overall easy to service. These motors are not only gutsy, but they're the exact same unit found in the USDM 4Runner V6, making parts and service a cinch! The motor cranks over quickly thanks to a new 12v battery, new valve cover gaskets, and a fresh oil change ensures that she'll be well-oiled and running smoothly every time. We even installed new spark plugs for even smoother operation of the V6. The automatic gearbox is a perfect companion for such a storied engine, and JDM Surfs come with the added benefit of a selectable transfer case to boot! High and low gearing is available on demand, and a center locking differential comes in handy if you find yourself entrenched in some tough terrain. The suspension is soft and compliant, and can tackle the tarmac or the trails depending on where your adventures take you. The brakes also inspire confidence and ABS is standard for those living in snowy climates. The power steering is light and on point for an SUV, and most importantly the 5 new 31" Falken tires will give you plenty of on and off road grip for tens of thousands of miles to come.
