The Hilux Surf is a capable, practical, and collectible platform. It's currently our hottest-selling model, and it's easy to see the value when you price out an American 4Runner. This 1996 gasser is a stunning truck, with its one-off Astral Black paint, OEM spare tire carrier, 3" lift, LED tail lamps, privacy tint, and 16" aftermarket alloys wrapped in 33" Falkens. Aside from a few light dings, chips, scuffs, and clearcoat etching the paint is in fair shape, and this recently serviced rig is turn-key ready to roll with a mere 128k verified and documented miles on the clock. As a daily driver, weekend escape vehicle, or spacious kid hauler, this terrific Toyota is a Japanese Classic through and through.

The cabin is in good shape overall. Spacious, simple, and well optioned, these trucks are wonderful daily drivers. Outward visibility is a strong suit of this model and the ride height and low beltline are a welcome change from modern SUVs. The dashboard houses standard dual front SRS airbags for some added peace of mind, and the grey vinyl is in good nick, showing no cracks or distortion which are typical of these models. The center stack houses a flip-up Carrozzeria audio unit, with a few Japanese jams pre-loaded for your next road trip. A digital automatic climate control unit is within arm's reach and is primed with cold A/C and hot heat for wherever your seasonal travels take you. Power windows, mirrors, and locks work as advertised, and the rear power glass even unfurls if your four legged friends need some additional ventilation in the rear. The seats are trimmed in a durable multicolored grey cloth. While the driver's bucket has undergone some repair work in the bolster, the rest of the materials show well, and the rear bench both reclines and folds forward for maximum functionality. The headliner is in good shape, and the carpet isn't too worse for the wear aside from some miscellaneous stains in the boot. Overall, the condition isn't much to turn your nose up at, and it should suit its eager first stateside owner quite well.

The benefit to owning one of these lovely utes is that parts and service are easy as pie. This is due to the fact that this powertrain is shared with the USDM model. The 3RZ-FE that powers this rig is fresh off an oil and filter service and starts up promptly, care of a new 12v battery. To ensure the four-banger maximizes fuel economy and power, a new engine air filter and fuel filter were installed by one of our trained techs. The 2.7L revs effortlessly to redline and this Surf manages to get up to highway speeds without causing any stress. The 3RZ is also peppy around town, and the midsize exterior dimensions make for easy parking, even in a busy parking lot. The automatic gearbox shifts just as it should and these powertrains can be daily driven and can hold up to loads of abuse. The selective transfercase allows the driver to choose between 2WD and 4WD depending on the outside conditions. If you happen to encounter loose terrain, a low-gear 4WD setting can be engaged. The suspension offers a firm yet compliant ride as we replaced the front and rear shocks with all-new ones. The steering system also received a refresh thanks to a new right front inner and outer tie rod. The light power-assisted system is direct and easy to articulate. The standard ABS brakes are more than capable of slowing this two ton hauler down to a stop without cause for concern. To finish off this wonderful Surf, we mounted and balanced all new 33" Falken all-terrain rubber. The new tires are mean looking but most importantly will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
