1996 Toyota Hilux Surf SSR-X
The newest legal to import Hilux Surf could be described as one of the best JDM vehicles to own in any segment. Revised for its third generation to provide better refinement, safety, and performance, Toyota built a really good truck. This 1996 SSR-X is finished in a beautiful (751) Evergreen Pearl over Metallic Silver two-tone and offered with a mere 122k verified miles. The body is in great shape aside from some normal door dings and scratches and is accessorized with a rare OEM rear tire carrier cover and factory rain guards, integrated brush guard, and rear spoiler. Packing a punchy and reliable 3.0L turbo diesel and a gutty 4WD system, this truck has the stones to take you nearly anywhere, regardless of the terrain. Freshly serviced and legally imported, this five-seat SUV would make for a wonderful trail warrior, kid hauler, or weekend cruiser!
The cabin saw some significant upgrades for the KZN185. the cabin is larger, utilizes more premium materials, and includes a bevy of safety features and power amenities. This example even includes a remote start system for those cold mornings! The view of the road ahead is clear and commanding as this tall truck sits above traffic. The dash is in good shape and lacks any cracking or significant UV damage. Dual SRS airbags are standard on this model although we hope you never have to use them. The biggest cabin upgrade is the Panasonic head unit that works as it should and even includes a remote control. It does power the speakers but the functionality of the head unit is cumbersome and will take some time to figure out as the controls are all in Japanese. Power amenities include power locks, windows, and mirrors that all work as they should. Even the rear glass can power retract for better ventilation. The blue seats are in an above-average shape. Besides an inch-long cut in the driver seat bottom, they have no major imperfections such as rips stains, or tears. We also wanted to note the interior clock is not working. The material has a corduroy-style texture and is soft to the touch and durable to boot. They are comfortable on long cruises and offer decent support. The rear seats can fold all the way forward to create a massive cargo area that has enough room to sleep in. The headliner, carpet, and door cards all have aged nicely and even the glove box still includes the factory owner's manual!
The mechanicals are the best part about the Hilux Surf. Toyota obviously built these things to last and the 1KZ-TE is an epic motor. Fresh off an oil and filter service, she starts right up thanks to two new 12v batteries installed by our technicians here in the shop. The 3.0L idles confidently and is mated to an automatic gearbox. The transmission shifts properly and thanks to the selective transfer case, the driver can choose to motor in 2WD for efficiency or 4WD when necessary. A center locking differential can be put to work if you get stuck in the back forty, but that likely won't happen with this capable rig. The suspension is happy to handle the rigors of daily use and the brakes feel confident as well. The steering is power-assisted and simple to articulate which makes parking a snap. The Bridgestone CV645 five-spoke alloys complete the look and have brand new all-terrain tires mounted at all four corners. These provide plenty of grip on loose surfaces and should last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
