1995 Toyota Hilux Surf 3.0TD
There is beauty in simplicity as the saying goes. At Japanese Classics, we believe there is a strong correlation between simplicity and reliability, as well. It's no secret that today's vehicles are rolling computers on wheels, and the truth is that cars were not always like this. Our 1995 Hilux Surf will likely outlast many new SUVs available for sale on the market today because they were built with durability in mind as the primary focus. Sure it's got a spacious cabin and some nice power amenities to boast about, but at the end of the day, you can depend on this thing to start up when you turn the key. Offered with a mere 135k verified and documented miles this turbodiesel rig is only just now getting broken in. Finished in a (179) Dark Gray Metallic, the body is in good shape aside from some normal dings, chips, and scuffs. Accented by a set of tinted factory raingards, OEM brushguard, parking pole, and skid plate these subtle accessories complete the period-correct aesthetic. The rugged 4x4 system beneath can be relied upon to take you nearly anywhere year-round, and this recently serviced truck is ready for your next adventure.
The cabin is in above average shape and has been cared for in a prior life. This is evidenced by the owner's manual and OEM multicolor carpet mats that are included in the sale. The dash is in good shape and lacks any cracks or distortion. Mounted in the center is a simple to use auto climate control system and factory radio. Both these work and the a/c blows cold. We did want to note that the compressor does squeak intermittently when the a/c is on but it works well otherwise. The seats are trimmed in a durable gray cloth and are comfortable on long drives. They lack any major rips, stains, or tears. The door cards also look good as does the headliner and both have escaped the past 25 years without any major blemishes. Power windows, locks, and mirrors are all standard and work as they should. For additional ventilation the rear glass powers down into the tailgate for a better breeze. The driver even benefits from an adjustable steering column and lumbar support to ensure an optimal driving position is achieved. That's not to say the interior is perfect as there are two small screw holes in the center console and a light stain on the driver's side carpet to note. Still compared to most of our Hilux's it's a step above average and pretty tough to complain about.
While the cabin is admittedly in decent shape we realize most clients are buying these for their prolific drivetrains. The 1KZ-TE is one of the best powerplants Toyota has ever produced and powers this five-seater. The four-banger starts up quickly thanks to a new 12v battery and is fresh off an oil and filter service. The engine idles confidently and is connected to an automatic gearbox. Power can be sent to all four wheels or two depending on the driver's preference. The gearbox shifts seamlessly and acceleration is impressive compared to most SUVs of this size. During sustained highway cruises the truck feels confident and will return decent fuel economy compared to the gas counterpart. TEMS factory adjustable suspension is compliant and can handle the abuse of daily use. The damping firmness can be adjusted at speed from the cabin to tailor the feel of the platform to the driver's preferences. The brakes feel better than most Surfs because this one has stock-size Bridgestones instead of massive oversized rubber. The tires have plenty of tread and lend themselves to a quiet ride.
