Exterior Overview
Toyota is a prolific manufacturer of sport utilities. The Hilux Surf is a volume leader for the brand, for many reasons. As a model, it is renowned for its capability, build quality, and efficiency. This 1995 is also one mean-looking truck! Finished in a classic Toyota Black (204), this rig is set off by a set of low offset 15″ Land Cruiser alloys, OEM rainguards, an OEM spare tire swingarm, and a stylish OEM rear spoiler. Aside from some scuffs, scrapes, and dings, the paint is in fine shape, and this Hilux is fresh off a recent service. Boasting only 110k verified and documented miles on the clock, the turbodiesel driveline is barely broken in. A Japanese Classic for all seasons, this terrific truck can be daily driven or put to use as a weekend play toy! Tough, fund to drive, and able to conquer nearly all terrain, this special Surf won’t last long.
Interior Overview
The cabin is simple, spacious, and anything but bare bones. A wood grain steering wheel adds some class and contrast to the cabin, and is immediately noticeable as you slide inside! To aid daily use, the driver enjoys a tilt-adjustable steering column and functional power windows, electric locks, and power mirrors. The center stack is close by and within arm’s reach. We added a BOSS audio headunit, which features Bluetooth integration so the pilot can keep their eyes on the road ahead. Above the simple-to-use climate system pumps in piping hot heat and cold A/C when called upon. If you prefer more natural ventilation, the rear hatch glass also powers down with the press of a button. The seats are trimmed in a blue and black cloth. The material lacks any major rips, stains, or tears and is highly durable. The rear row 4-way reclines and tumbles forward to fold flat to create a flat loading floor. The carpets, headliner, and door cards are in fine shape and have withstood the past 25 years without sustaining major abuse. Aside from a cracked dashboard, it’s hard to nitpick this truck, as it was clearly cared for in a life overseas.
Mechanical Overview
Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 1KZ-TE engine springs to life with a twist of the key thanks to two new 12V batteries we installed. A new fuel filter, engine air filter, and set of serpentine belts were installed as soon as it got onto the lift! To keep the oil level full, a new valve cover gasket replaced the worn-out old one. Running tip top, the four-banger is linked to a stout automatic transmission. The Surf hustles up to highway speeds with ease, and gear shifts are executed properly. The pilot can select 4WD on the fly, and if acceleration and fuel economy are of importance, driving in RWD is the ticket. For off-road excursions, a low-range 4WD can be engaged as well. If you need to slow down, this SUV has you covered. New rear brake shoes and new front brake pads keep stopping distances short. The Rancho suspension is predictable and can handle the rigors of daily use and abuse without breaking a sweat. The power steering is light yet direct and has been improved with a steering damper and a rebuilt power steering pump. After installing new inner and outer front tie rods to dial in an alignment, we mounted and balanced four new 30″ Falken tires. The new rubber looks mean, reduces road noise, and will provide all the weather grip you will need for tens of thousands of miles to come.
