The Hilux Surf is unstoppable, and Toyotas formula for building these rugged trucks has become legendary. Nowadays, you'd be hard-pressed to find a turbodiesel, manual transmission SUV like this 1995 example. Offered with an incredibly low 82K verified miles, and finished in a timeless Toyota Black (204) the body is in good shape other than a few minor dings, scuffs, and chips associated with normal use. This SSR-X Limited Surf comes nicely equipped, legally imported, and up to date on maintenance for those looking for a turn-key JDM import. Getting rarer by the day, these real-deal old school SUVs are a killer value and make great weekend toys and daily drivers alike.

The simple, yet straight forward cabin is refreshing compared to new vehicles with their dizzying array of screens and buttons. Power accessories include the mirrors, locks, a one-touch driver window, and there is a decent sounding Carrozzaria head unit fashioned in place of the OEM one. The gauges are easy to read and nicely illuminated and the road of the view ahead is commanding. The dash is in good shape and is neither cracked or distorted. Adorned with three-spoke Imola leather-wrapped steering wheel, a tilt column makes the driving position more accomodating for folks of all sizes. Unlike most vehicles, the designers at Toyota included a set of cup holders in the center stack, and there additional storage space in the glove box and center console storage upfront. The seats, which are upholstered in a blue/charcoal combo look fantastic and are supportive over long drives. There are no major imperfections such as rips, stains, or tears in either of the two rows. The A/C has been recharged, and the heat has you covered for these few raining cold nights of spring. That's not to say this 25-year-old interior is perfect, as it has light staining on the carpet and headliner and a missing plastic seatback adjuster for the driver's bucket.

The drivetrain Toyota chose for the Surf doesn't get any better. The 2982cc 1KZ-TE turbodiesel benefits from a fresh oil and filter service and turns over with a twist of the key. Mated to a selective transfer case, the five-speed manual gearbox sets this Hilux apart from most RHD examples. Enthusiasts love the control it gives, and shifts accomplished without a hitch or grind. The manual also eeks out a touch more economy than the slushbox, and the driver can choose between 2WD and high and low 4WD options. The stock suspension handles bumps large and small without breaking a sweat, and the power steering is properly weighted. The front brakes have been completely replaced and new pads and rotors aid this four-door truck to slow down with complete confidence. The aftermarket silver alloys are wrapped in new Falken all-season rubber, mounted by one of our trained technicians, and even the spare wheel has a new tire.

The Hilux is a Japanese Classic for its rugged capabilities, low cost of ownership, and bulletproof reliability. With the 1KT-ZE and manual gearbox, this is a can't miss off-road toy or your new Overlanding daily driver!
