Toyota has a long lineage of building some tough SUVs. Fresh off a redesign of the iconic Hilux model entered its third generation boasting additional refinement, more safety features, and a bulletproof drivetrain. This 1995 is finished in a Light Blue Pearl Metallic over Silver Two-Tone (8L6) and is offered with a mere 68K verified miles. The body is in good shape other than some typical minor door dings, scuffs, and chips. It's aesthetically improved ever so slightly by some sleek privacy tint, OEM rain guards, and new tires. Freshly serviced, and legally imported, this turbodiesel Japanese Classic is the latest and greatest to arrive on our shores, and you won't want to miss out!

The interior uses some updated materials over the prior generation, and this example has held up wonderfully. From a safety perspective, dual front airbags became standard as well as ABS. To match the exterior color, blue swatches of color were used to brighten up these normally dark interiors. The upholstery is done in a light blue and is still soft to the touch and comfortable on long trips. The front captain's chairs lack any significant imperfections such as rips, tears, or holes. The same can be said about the split-folding rear bench as well. The carpets do note some light staining as you'd expect for a truck of this age, but we do have the factory floor mats to keep them looking sharp moving forward. Power equipment includes electric locks, windows, and mirrors that still work properly. An awesome factory upgrade that we don't see too frequently is a power sunroof. Thankfully this one has it and it power tilts and retracts. The rear tailgate also powers down to increase interior ventilation.

Mechanically improved over the legendary N130 generation trucks that were in production from 1989 to 1995. A longer wheelbase, beefier 4WD system and more rigidity were all focused on. Perhaps for the best, Toyota chose to retain the rock-solid 1KZ-TE three-liter turbodiesel. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the massive four-banger turns over quickly thanks to a new 12V battery. Mated to a trusty 4WD system, an automatic gearbox makes good use of this engine's prolific torque profile. Acceleration is impressive for an SUV, let alone one of this age. The gear ratios are acceptable for our higher US interstate speeds while it's off the line performance is rather impressive. The suspension feels much more stable and planted than the older models and their interior NVH has improved generously. This SSR-X does also have a low gearset if the going gets tough and new tires to help aid grip a touch. The new rubber also maximizes braking performance and reduces road noise over the old set.
