Big, brash, and in your face, this 1995 Hilux Surf makes a statement. Powered by a raucous turbodiesel and underpinned by a selective 4x4 system with a center locker, this rig has the stones to back up its tough-guy aesthetic. Rocking a fresh coat of Cool Khaki Grey (PAF), the paint is in good nick and this lifted SSR-G model is set off by an OEM rear spoiler, RV Inno roof rack mounts, privacy tint, and 18" AKUT alloys with new 33" Falken tires. Best of all, this recently serviced Surf is offered with a mere 156k verified and documented miles, which is barely broken in on the legendary 1KZ-TE engine. Capable, collectible, and reliable, this KZN185 would make a wonderful daily driver, weekend cruiser, or wicked trail rig. Packed full of modern upgrades and plenty of desirable equipment, this Japanese Classic is an enthusiast's dream!

The interior is spacious, thoughtfully designed, and nicely equipped. An American Alpine head unit with Bluetooth functionality was added after this truck arrived in the US. For those riding in the front, dual SRS airbags are standard for some added reassurance when on the road, and the driver benefits from an adjustable steering column and lumbar support. The view ahead is clear and commanding, and this tall ute rides far above traffic for premium visibility. We did want to note the dashboard is distorted by the outer edge of the glovebox and by the base of the windshield behind the gauge cluster, which we do see from time to time. While this is common, the good news is that the latter is hardly visible unless you know it's there. Otherwise, the dashboard is in good nick and lacks any cracking or fading. The center stack includes a simple-to-use automatic climate control system. Heat and ice-cold A/C make year-round use pleasurable. There is a host of electric amenities, too, including power windows and locks. That's not all, as the rear glass electrically unfurls for extra ventilation for your furry friend and the rear spoiler's rear under mirror can be deployed to see the vehicle behind the Surf when reversing. The upholstery is done in a durable bluish-gray corduroy cloth. The seating surfaces lack any major rips, holes, or tears, and are comfortable on long trips. The driver even receives adjustable lumbar support and an adjustable steering column to find the optimal driving position. For those along for the ride in the back, the rear bench 4-way reclines, unlike our plebeian 4Runner's rear bench seat. The door cards, headliner, and carpets are in fine shape and even the OEM carpets, mats, spare key, maintenance booklet, and owners manuals are included in the sale. That's not to say she is perfect as we also wanted to note that the power mirrors have given up the ghost and that the tachometer is inoperable! Still, at 25 years old, this gem was really cared for in a prior life in our opinion.

As the N185 was sold here in the US finding parts and service is a snap. Our example is equipped with the most desirable engine, the 3.0L 1KZ-TE. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the Surf cranks over care of 2 new 12v batteries. The sound is utterly awesome as a one-off straight pipe exhaust makes all the right noises! The engine air filter and fuel filter were replaced while in our shop and the serpentine belts were replaced while we were at it. To keep the engine and electronics working flawlessly, the ECU was rebuilt and now carries a lifetime warranty that is fully transferrable. A new valve cover gasket keeps all the oil internal to the engine and a new front transfer case seal does the same for the 4WD setup. The automatic transmission makes good use of this diesel's broad torque curve and this Toyota accelerates better than most SUVs we get to test. If you want the best fuel economy you can set the truck up to run in 2WD but the off-road die-hards will love the factory center locker that comes in these JDM Hiluxes. The suspension has a 2.5" lift and feels predictable on uneven pavement. A fresh alignment keeps her tracking straight and will maximize the tire life of the new 33" All terrains. Lastly, we bolted on new front rotors and slid in a fresh set of pads to ensure the ABS brakes allow the new owner to stop on a dime!
