1995 Hilux Surf 3.0TD SSR-X
The 2nd generation Hilux Surf is endearing. It's the consummate overachiever and is the perfect size. It's surprisingly fun to drive for an SUV, with its lighter curb weight, low-end grunt, and predictable platform. This 1995 SSR-X is powered by a punchy 3.0L turbodiesel and is finished in a classic Prussian Red over Gray (25T) two-tone. Set off by a polished OEM brushguard framing some sizable Cibie foglamps, the paint is in good shape aside from some light dings, chips, and scuffs associated with normal wear and tear. Best of all, this recently serviced rig is turn key and ready to roll, and boasts a mere 114k verified and documented miles on the clock. Good for shuttling about the kids, heading down a dusty trail less traveled, or putting around town running errands, this Surf makes for the perfect year-round hauler. Collectible, capable, and tough, this Japanese Classic is an all-around wonderful truck and an incredible overall value!
You'd expect the cabin to be sparse and bare-bones, but it's actually not! It should also be mentioned that this example's cabin is in above-average shape compared to our average Hilux. For starters, the dashboard lacks any cracking or fading which commonly afflicts these vehicles. A simple climate control system can distribute cold A/C for the remaining hot days of the year and heat can be cycled through during those chilly fall nights. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable side bolsters to help find the most comfortable driving position. Power windows, rear glass, electric mirrors, and door locks all work in typical Toyota fashion, and make daily use much more enjoyable. The gray herringbone style upholstery is in above-average condition and lacks any major rips, stains and tears. The same can be said for the matching material in the door cards. The headliner and carpets have faired well over the years and so have most of the soft-touch surfaces. Even the OEM audio works, and overall it's clear this truck was cared for in Japan.
Under the hood, the 1KZ-TE sits low in the chassis. The 3.0L turbo diesel mill is fresh off an oil and filter service. It starts up with the twist of the key care thanks to two new 12v batteries we installed in our shop. A new engine air filter and fuel filter assist the 1KZ in running tip-top, and the four-cylinder pulls hard to redline and feels healthy as a horse. The automatic transmission shifts reassuringly and is a sturdy unit. The gearing makes for a peppy feel about town and its comfortable at higher interstate speeds, too. The selective transfer allows the driver to toggle between 2WD and 4WD on the fly and a low gearset is reserved for the worst road conditions. Acceleration is impressive thanks to the broad low-end torque and the light curb weight of this N130. The power steering is light yet direct and the braking is fantastic thanks to the new front pads and rotors we replaced. The refinished gunmetal OEM wheels are wrapped in grippy 31" Falkens at all four corners that will last for tens of thousands of miles to come. Whether it's for daily use, or a weekend escape, this Hilux is ready to go and is the perfect steed!
