Exterior Overview
When this rig rolled off the line in 1995, times were different. Toyota was pumping out their best designs, and Americans were gobbling up 4Runners from dealer lots. These midsize SUVs were ergonomic, handsome, and above all else, reliable. Finished in a classic Dark Green Mica over Silver (29X), this SSR-X is adorned by 15″ aftermarket alloys, an aggressive OEM rear spoiler, some sweet factory graphics, and chrome bumpers, door handles, and mirror caps. Aside from some scuffs, scrapes, and dings, the paint is in fine shape and this 78k verified and documented mile truck is fresh off a comprehensive service. Boasting an efficient and powerful turbodiesel powerplant, this sublime sport utility is much more fun to drive than a domestic 4Runner. This Japanese Classic 4×4 would make for a cool canyon climber, dedicated daily driver, or wicked weekend warrior. Collectible, cool, and capable Surfs are our forte, and this one is a killer little hauler!

Interior Overview
The cabin is ergonomic, simple, and includes a few electric amenities to make daily driving seamless. The driver can find the ideal seating position thanks to a tilt-adjustable steering column. Adjustable lumbar and hip support keeps the pilot from sloshing about the cabin on those rough dirt roads. Power mirrors and power locks enhance the daily driving experience and work like a charm. Outward visibility from the drivers seat is fantastic, and the low lying dash is out of the way and lacks a massive touchscreen like every other SUV nowadays. It does have a dash cover to obscure a few cracks, and the center stack is close by and within arms reach. The climate control is simple to operate and includes cold A/C and piping hot heat. The rear hatch glass powers down as do the electric side windows if you fancy natural ventilation. A brand new American radio has been sourced to handle your music requests. This BOSS unit includes Bluetooth integration so you can keep your eyes safely on the road, too. The blue and black upholstery is durable and in above average shape. The rear seats also 4-way recline, split fold, and tumble forward to create a larger cargo area. The headliner and carpets are in good nick and aside from some adhesive residue and screw holes beneath the shifter surround, it’s hard to nitpick this ride.

Mechanical Overview
Under the skin, this Surf really shines. A robust body-on-frame platform can withstand loads of abuse and the same can be said for the engine, the 1KZ-TE. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3.0L springs to life courtesy of two new 12V batteries. A new fuel filter replacement is something we always do as soon as it gets on the lift, and we also replaced the engine air filter so that the four-banger breathes freely. A bit of a refresh was needed for the 1K, so one of our trained techs replaced the valve cover gasket with a new one. We also flushed the old coolant out and replaced it with fresh stuff, which will be good for the next four years. The turbodiesel pulls hard to redline and creates gobs of low-end torque. An automatic transmission shifts like a champ and we performed a fluid service so things stay that way. The selectable 4WD system works like it should, in typical Toyota fashion. 4WD can be engaged on the fly, and a low range can be selected when a beach trip of snow storm stands in this Surf’s way. The driveline was shored up further with a new right rear axle seal. The suspension is predictable and can handle the rigors of daily use and abuse. The brakes feel confident, and the power steering is light yet on point. We performed a power steering fluid flush and then mounted and balanced four new 32″ Falken tires. Turn key and ready to roll, your adventurous road trip awaits!
