Toyota's HiAce is far more than just a head-turning hauler. It's outstanding off the beaten path, with stout 4WD underpinnings, and a determined turbodiesel drivetrain built to satisfy the enthusiast.

Exterior Overview

Toyota’s HiAce is far more than just a head-turning hauler. It’s outstanding off the beaten path, with stout 4WD underpinnings, and a determined turbodiesel drivetrain built to satisfy the enthusiast. These vans are also stylish, spacious, and do a swell job at bridging the gap between a Sienna and an Econoline. Finished in Pepper White (850), the cosmetics are clean on this 1995 Super Custom Limited eight-seater, and the aesthetic is rounded off by a blacked out front grille, OEM rainguards, and a tasteful OEM rear spoiler and lollipop mirror. With only 108k verified and documented miles on the ticker, this van is barely broken in, too! For cabover connoisseurs, aspiring overlanders, or those needing a versatile way to commute over loose surfaces, this HiAce is a real deal Japanese Classic, and the gift that keeps on giving!

Interior Overview

Like the exterior, the interior of this super hauler is exciting and welcoming. The seats are trimmed in a plush mocha cloth, and fortunately, all three rows have resisted any major wear and tear over the years. The middle row can swivel a full 360 degrees to keep your rear passengers occupied on family road trips, and the seats can also fold fully flat if you or your occupants need to catch some shuteye. Power windows, mirrors, and locks work like a charm to assist daily use, and this Super Custom Limited features the highly desirable triple sunroof suite. The front sunroof tilts open manually, while the rear two are power-adjustable to maximize natural airflow into the cabin. While all equipment works well, we wanted to note that the power folding mirrors are finicky in operation. Dual zone climate control features rear heat and ice cold A/C for all passengers, which can be independently adjusted from the rear. The dash shows well save for a minor chip, and the center stack below houses functional Pioneer audio, with Bluetooth integration. The driver benefits from a power-tilt steering column, power seat adjustability, and the slim factory steering wheel feels great in the palms of your hands as you pilot this delightful cabover down the freeway. The remaining interior materials are all in good nick, from the headliner to the matching brown carpet underneath, and it’s hard to complain about the fit and finish of anything, although the center console trim has started to peel. As a whole, it’s clear to see this van was well cared for in a prior life, and this one should be well-suited to whatever adventures await. We even retained the factory Japanese owner’s manual and maintenance booklets!

Mechanical Overview

Positioned snugly beneath the floorboards is Toyota’s strong, torquey, and efficient 1KZ-TE turbodiesel engine. These large displacement four bangers are easy to service and frugal to operate, and with a comprehensive service performed by our trained technicians, this example is turn-key and ready to roll. We kicked things off by dropping in a new 12v battery and performing a basic oil and filter service. The engine air filter and fuel filter were changed too, for good measure. We shored up a pesky oil leak by replacing the valve cover gasket and half moon seals, and flushed out all the old coolant with new juice. With the maintenance performed, the 3.0TD runs like a top and dare we say this egg-shaped hauler feels sporty when you mash the throttle. It sends power straight to an automatic gearbox, which also benefits from a fluid change and a new transmission pan gasket. An all-wheel-drive system disperses power and torque, and these practical vans are more fuel efficient than one might expect. The suspension cruises comfortably, and both rear upper and lower swaybar link bushings were installed to pass VA state inspection here. The power steering is direct and easy to maneuver, and the brakes grab with authority. The last line of defense between you and the road, the factory alloys are shod in fresh  all terraub Yokohama rubber. Fresh off a four-wheel alignment, you’ll be ready to tackle all terrains for tens of thousands of miles to come!
