Capable, rugged, SUVs are hardly being built anymore as consumers nowadays settle for large sedans masquerading about as sport utilities. Body on frame examples like this 1994 SSR-X Hilux Surf are getting difficult to find, and this turbo-diesel 4x4 is offered with only 75K verified miles. Classically proportioned, and adorned with a polished OEM brush guard, the Dark Blue Pearl (E83) paint is in good shape and the body only has a few minor dings and scuffs associated with normal use. Freshly serviced, and sitting on new oversized Falken Rubitreks, this Toyota is ready to rock, whether you're Overlanding or getting dirty!

The interior is period correct Toyota. Basic switchgear and simple, yet efficient, ergonomics are part of the design and its evident this truck was cared for. The gray upholstery with its matching door cards and headliner are all in good nick. The seating material is soft, and five people can ride in comfort. No rips, holes, or tears are noted on the seating surfaces, and the rear row folds forward if more storage is needed. The only cabin upgrade is a Kenwood head unit, that actually works for US radio stations. It also features auxiliary and USB inputs, and the speaker quality is still good. The dash is in good shape; lacking any cracks or age-related distortion. There is a stick-on nav mount if you're adding in any accessories, and the climate control system is front and center. The system works as it should, with power windows standard if you prefer more natural ventilation. The power mirrors and locks also work as they should, making this Surf a fantastic daily driver. Like stateside 4Runners, the rear window rolls down and the tailgate can drop down, creating a pseudo-bench. The factory owner manuals complete this largely original interior and are located in the glove box.

The mechanicals is what makes this truck special. Perhaps one of Toyotas best engines ever designed, the 1KZ-TE 3.0L inline-four powers this rig. Fresh off and oil service and with a new 12V battery installed, she turns over happily and sets into a smooth idle. For cold starts, a cabin-mounted idle-up switch can put a little more heat into her for those cold mornings, which is specific to the diesel. The power is sent through an automatic gearbox for two or four wheels depending on driver preference. The selective transfer case also includes low gearing if the going ever gets tough. Cutting edge at the time, Toyota's signature TEMS adjustable suspension was equipped on this trim level and can change ride firmness on the fly. For a truck, it rides well, and a new front left axel has been installed to make sure the driveline remains stout. The power steering is light and the brakes feel assured. Best of all, new Falken rubber has been mounted and balanced at all four corners for premium year-round grip. This low mileage, tough Toyota is an icon for a reason. Touting its bulletproof reliability, low cost of ownership, and inexpensive maintenance needs this Japanese Classic is eager to hit the road.
