Reputations have to be built up over years of continued success, and Toyota has a sterling reputation for building really good trucks and SUVs. Legendary models, such as this 1994 Toyota Hilux are tough, efficient rigs, and this SSR-X is a great example of a timeless truck. Utilizing Toyota's classic Black (204), the angular styling gives an all-business aesthetic that this truck can clearly black up. Set off with a set of five-spoke alloys, OEM rain guards, and a factory polished brush guard. The body is in good shape other than a few minor dings, dents, and scratches. Offered with a mere 126K verified miles, this 4x4 five-seater features the most desirable turbodiesel engine ever shoehorned into this chassis, known to be nearly bulletproof for those who require a car they can rely on!

The cabin is in great shape and has been looked after in Japan. The dash is in good shape and doesn't have any major damage such as distortion or cracking. The controls are laid out logically for the driver, with your automatic climate control, with cold A/C, readily at hand. The seating in comfort for long trips, and has a total capacity of five. No major imperfections can be found on the seating surfaces, including rips, tears, or burns. The rears can even fold down for a much larger cargo area. Standard equipment includes power windows, power locks, and an adjustable steering column. Those items work as they should although we did want to disclose the nonoperational head unit and that the mirrors are no longer powered. Still, this is a 26-year-old vehicle, and as a whole its still in remarkable shape. The carpets, headliner, and door cards all look good and have been obviously cared for.

The underpinnings of this Surf harken back to a forgotten era in vehicle design. In '94 body on frame SUVs we pretty much all you could buy, and they last longer and are more robust than the unibody crossover masquerading as trucks we see today. While ride quality isn't a strong point of designs such as these the new oversized Falkens we installed at all four corners lend themselves to a remarkably civil on-road feel. The engine itself is a massive four-banger, the 1KZ-TE. Fresh off an engine oil and filter service, our trained technicians have also installed two new 12V batteries to aid cold starts in the dead of winter. They should last for at least another four years, and aid this Hilux with a quick ignition. The engine idles confidently, but don't expect it to be vibration-free like the larger 4.2L mills that go into the larger Land Cruisers. Acceleration is brisk and the automatic transmission sends power to two or four wheels based on driver preference. The low-end power is prominent and the rig gets from stoplight to stoplight way faster than the comparable gasoline 3.0L unit. If the going gets tough, a low-speed gearset is available. Still its perfectly fine to daily drive if that's your plan, and the power-assisted steering is light and easy to articulate and the brakes are confident.
