The Toyota Hilux Surf is a big part of Toyota's reputation for building bulletproof products, and a huge reason why so many are still running after more than a quarter-century. Optioned with Toyotas stout and stubborn 1KZ-TE turbodiesel, an auto transmission, and selective 4WD, this Hilux can take you from Moab to Costco in comfort. Offered with a mere 50K verified miles, this Metallic Blue (29Z) 1994 is in good condition mechanically and cosmetically. Sure there are the normal lower bumper scuffs, dings, and dents from normal use, but compared to 4Runners sold here stateside, it's in considerably better shape. Legally imported and brought up to date on maintenance, this low mileage Hilux is already a good value and will appreciate in the years to come.

Unlike the bare-bones base model that Toyota designed, the SSR-X trim level added some decent interior options and amenities. Power windows and locks are examples of this, and a tilt column and power steering make parking a comfortable experience. The blue and gray cloth seats are plenty comfortable and provide ample support on long drives. The driver's bucket has two blemishes on the bolster and seat bottom, but the other seats are in good shape. The dash is done is a grey hue, and is neither cracked or distorted. The head unit is absent, but the other controls in the center stack work as they should. Digital climate with heat and A/C were standard, and additional ventilation comes from a retractable sunroof. The OEM rain guards to a great job of quelling wind noises with the windows down at speed, and like the 4Runner, the rear window can be electrically lowered. The headliner and door cards are held tight and taut in their proper locations. The carpets are in fine condition, and the cargo areas aren't missing any of the plastic trim items.

The powertrain on these Hilux's was nearly bulletproof and features the forbidden fruit of engines, the 1KZ-TE. This 2982cc four-banger gets decent fuel economy, and benefits from a bevy of recent maintenance items. Two new 12V batteries and a fresh oil service allow for easy cold starts, and the dash has an "idle up" bottom on hand to get some quicker heat into the engine. The lumpy four-cylinder created decent torque and impressive midrange, and the Hilux scoots up to interstate speeds without an issue. The suspension does a decent job of sorting out road imperfections, but that should come as a surprise with the massive ground clearance. The 4WD system is selective and low gearing can be utilized if the running gets tough. The brakes are steady, and the steering is light and assisted. Visually the lack of running boards emphasizes the off-road prowess of this platform, and four new oversized tires complete the package.

This imposing SUV is a Japanese Classic and is highly prized for its diesel powerplant, capable 4WD, and storied history. Don't let this low mileage Hilux getaway, as clean examples are getting harder to find and Toyota isn't building anymore!
