1994 Toyota Hilux Surf SSR-X
The Hilux Surf is a desirable SUV from so many perspectives. Performance, practicality, and durability are all part of the ownership experience on trucks like this 1994 SSR-X Limited. Powered by a hearty turbodiesel and underpinned by a sturdy 4x4 system, these make fantastic daily drivers, weekend trail rigs, and everything in between. Finished in Aztec Blue (23W) this five-seater is adorned with OEM rain guards, a subtle factory rear spoiler, and a brutish OEM brush guard. It also boasts a spacious and well-appointed interior, and is offered for sale with a mere 89k verified and documented miles. Aside from some light chips, dings, and scrapes, the body and paint are in good nick, and this midsize Toyota was obviously cared for in a prior life. For those looking for a year-round, collectible, and reliable SUV, it is hard to beat this timeless, turn-key Japanese Classic
The cabin is in above-average shape and was cared for overseas. The upholstery is a good example of this and it is soft to the touch, lacking any rips, stains, or tears. The same can be said for the dashboard which lacks any cracking or age-related distortion. Mounted in the center stack is a JVC head unit upgrade, which doesn't sound half bad. Adjacent is a simple to use climate control system that currently blows cold A/C and piping hot heat. The headliner, door cards, and carpets have withstood major abuse over the years, as has the cargo area. There is a fair amount of electric amenities including power windows, locks, and mirrors. These all work as advertised, and even the rear window powers down for additional ventilation or for some fresh air for your canine friend. Even the owner's manuals and maintenance booklets are still in the glovebox and are included in the sale.
Despite its tough guy aesthetic, this truck delivers a surprisingly refined drive on the tarmac. Few squeaks or rattles filter through the cabin, and it feels quite composed overall. That is likely due to a host of fixes and maintenance performed by one of our trained techs. New shocks were installed at all four corners and new 31" Falkens were mounted and balanced. The brakes are confident feeling and the steering is as direct as an SUV gets. We saved the best part for last, the engine. The 1KZ-TE is a legendary mill and is fresh off an oil and filter service. A new valve cover gasket was installed when it was up on the lift as was a new fuel filter. Thanks to two new 12v batteries, the 3.0L cranks to life and idles with confidence. The selective transfer case allows the driver to select between two and four-wheel-drive. 4WD low is also on hand for those who have gotten themselves into a pickle. When powering the rear wheels, the Surf is downright quick in SUV terms and is pretty miserly on fuel. Sustained highway driving doesn't seem to tax the 1KZ, and she pulls strong as all get-out.
