The old adage that "they don't make 'em like they used to" applies to sports utility vehicles more than any other segment in our opinion. Vehicles like this 1994 Hilux Surf have morphed into front-wheel-drive, car-based crossovers. It's sad really, but it turns out that you can still find reasonably priced body-on-frame classics like ours, offered with a mere 105K verified miles. Finished in a sporty Blue Pearl (8E3), the body is in good shape other than some minor dings, chips, and scratches. Powered by a durable and torquey 3.0L turbo diesel, this JDM 4X4 is well optioned, legally imported, and recently maintained for those who want a turn-key ownership experience.

The cabin is clean and simple, with some impressive ergonomics. There is a fair amount of power equipment with its sought after electric sunroof that tilts and retracts. The electric windows and locks work properly and the driver has one-touch control for their glass. The automatic climate controls work as it should and the system still blows nice and cold. Additionally, the OEM audio system works properly but we prefer the snarl of the turbodiesel. The textured gray cloth seats are in above average shape and lack any rips stains or tears. They are comfortable for long cruises, and the rear bench can fold forward if you need more cargo capacity. The door cards are in equally good nick except for a small cut that was repaired on the driver's rear door. We also wanted to note that the power mirrors are now only manually adjustable. The carpets have been cared for and the dash lacks any imperfections except four small holes from a nav mount.

The driveline featured in this Hilux Surf is known for its bulletproof nature. The engine, Toyota's famous 1KZ-TE sits low in the engine bay and turns over quickly thanks to two new 12V batteries. It's a massive four-banger, and what it may lack in refinement it makes up for with its impressive performance. The 3.0L mill also benefits from a fresh oil and filter service, so there is no need to schedule any servicing for another 3,000 miles. Fed through a smooth-shifting automatic gearbox power can be directed to the rear or all four wheels thanks to a selective transfer case. Acceleration is better than your average SUV and the gearing is appropriate for highway use if you're looking to use this as your new commuter. The TEMS adjustable factory suspension feels good and the chassis can sort out large and small bumps with ease. The power steering is light and the power brakes are confident in slowing this rig down to manageable speeds. The aftermarket six-spoke alloys are all wrapped in new 31" Falken all-season rubber. They will last for years to come and do great in less than ideal road conditions.
