The Hilux is known for its legendary reliability and off-road capabilities. This impressive, 1994 Hilux Surf SSR-X has all the right equipment and options and comes ready to tackle stateside on and off-road terrain. The Toyota Hilux built its reputation of being tough as nails and it comes as no surprise. Packing a brutey turbo diesel, an equally capable 4WD system, and room for four adults makes for a great combination. Finished in a stately Evergreen Pearl (751) over Silver Metallic (147) lower cladding the truck looks absolutely killer. While there are your typical little stone chips and clear coat scratches there isn't much to gripe about. The body is in the same shape with only a few routine little door dings that any 158K verified mile truck is bound to accrue. The factory brush guard and Bosch fogs give the front end a mean look, while the factory spare tire cover adds a little panache to the back end.
Much like the body, the interior has been kept all stock, just as Toyota had intended. The cockpit has plenty of room for five passengers and is simple and straightforward in its design. The two-tone seats look just as good as they feel. They offer more than enough support for day-to-day use while being supportive enough for the road less traveled. Neither the front nor back seats have any real issues to worry about. There is a slight hole in the driver's bolster from hopping in and out over the years but that's really about the worst of it. Free of those careless stains people tend to leave there's really not much to report with this one which is impressive considering the age. The back seats are a 50/50 split-fold that way you can nearly double the carrying capacity. Plus with that power back glass, you won't have any issues with making that trip to Lowes in case you opt for those 10' 2x4s. Additional amenities upfront include power windows, locks, and mirrors as well as dual cupholders and an adjustable steering column. Automatic climate control is standard which is great for the upcoming spring we're all anxiously awaiting. The oversized factory rain guards are a nice touch for when you want some fresh air even when the weather takes a turn for the worse. The power sunroof and back glass really do turn this SUV about as close as you can get to a full-on convertible when the weather finally does break. The factory radio still works as it should and does its best to work here stateside and the speakers are still in right good shape should you choose to update the head unit.
The body on frame Hilux is a rugged brute, and this one is powered by the most desirable engine offered. The 3.0L 1KZ-TE turbodiesel is loved for its reliability and massive torque profile. It benefits from a fresh oil and filter service and turns over with a quick twist of the key thanks to two new batteries. The automatic transmission is a fairly simple unit and is mated to a selective transfer case. This Surf can be driven in 2WD most of the time for the best fuel efficiency, but when extra grip is required 4WD can be engaged with the press of a button mounted on the range selector. A neat factory upgrade is the optional TEMS suspension. On the more upmarket Hilux's such as this one, the driver could control ride quality on the fly with a dash-mounted toggle switch. The system functions and the truck can handle the rigors of daily use without beating the driver up. The steering is power-assisted and light considering the size of these guys. New all terrain tires make sure you've got more than enough grip for whatever the situation calls for. This diesel Hilux is a real gem. It drives well and is more than capable of handling whatever you can throw at it. Durable, rugged, and fun this Toyota truck deserves to go to a home that's gonna put her through her paces, and appreciate the rig for what it was meant to do.
