This 1994 Subaru Impreza WRX is the perfect example of a rally car for the street. Offered with only 124K verified miles, this Light Silver Metallic (406) sedan packs a burbling boxer-four, AWD, a manual transmission, and room for five. This little Scooby is fun to drive, efficient, and can handle any weather you throw at it.
Subaru utilized better interior materials than most manufacturers did at the time, and because of this, they have stood the test of time far better than most. For instance, the dash uses a quality soft-touch material and is still in good shape. The front buckets are aggressively bolstered upfront to keep driver and passenger from sloshing around in the twisties. Both the front seats and rear bench lack any major imperfections such as rips, tears, or stains, and are done in gray cloth with red accents. A leather-wrapped Nardi steering wheel and sunroof were the only upgraded options from the factory, but hawkeyed enthusiasts may notice the STi V5 carbon gauges overlays. All the gauges work properly and boost is monitored by a Defi unit mounted atop the steering wheel. The sunroof does work, but the motor is entering its final stages of life. Creature comforts include power-folding mirrors, one-touch electric drivers window, and powered locks. These systems all function properly, as does the A/C and heating system. The OEM radio was also ditched at some point for an updated Carrozzarria unit. The speakers are all powered, although many would argue the natural soundtrack of the EJ is better than the radio in the first place.
The formula Subaru utilized for the WRX was pretty simple. A potent 2.0L four-cylinder, symmetrical AWD, and a proper five-speed manual work in unison to deliver tons of grip in all conditions. The EJ20G Subaru chose for the powerplant makes good power throughout the rev range, but especially down low. Startup is swift, and the boxer sets into a constant idle, with that traditional burble ever-present. A new Exide AGM battery will be great through the next four to five winters, providing good current in the coldest of scenarios. An HKS exhaust combines with a new K&N air filter to ensure proper breathing of the four-cylinder. A fresh oil and filter service ensures that no routine maintenance is needed for another 3000 miles, giving the next owner a breather on service. To keep under hood temps down a PTP turbo blanket keeps the snail insulated from the rest of the engine bay. Acceleration is swift, and the five-speed manual transmission shifts without a hitch or grind. A new fuel pump and filter have been added as well, to save on maintenance down the road. A short shifter makes the feel a bit more connected and notchy, as normally the bushings are pretty worn out. The OEM suspension and brakes do some stellar work, and the AWD sedan stops and steers wherever you take it. The alloys just had a new rubber-mounted at all four corners and can handle wet and dry conditions with confidence.
This WRX looks great, sounds great, and you guessed it; drives great. Its fantastic build quality, inspiring performance, and low cost of ownership make this a killer value and bonafide Japanese Classic.
