We get a lot of great body on frame SUV's here at the dealership, but as the years go by, the Hilux Surf model always retains its position as top dog. Our 1994 sports an easy to maintain 3.0 V6, steadfast 4WD, and a slick custom graphics package worth writing home about. Refinished in a one-off Dreadnought black, an aftermarket grille, refinished bronze rolling stock, and OEM optional rear spoiler set off the aesthetic, and privacy tint and OEM rainguards complete the all business look. Traveling a mere 147k miles over the years, this Surf is a champ on US highways and byways and would make for a great head turner at your local Cars & Coffee too. Easy to own, drive, and maintain, why wouldn't we call the N130 Surf a Japanese Classic?

Like the exterior, the simple, spartan interior is designed to perform and reward the driver from quick around-town jaunts to longer highway excursions. The seats are upholstered in a durable grey cloth and save for some light wear to the driver's bolster, they've remained in good shape over the years and have resisted any of the typical tears, burns and stains seen on trucks of this vintage. Even the dash is free of any pesky cracking or UV distortion, and despite some separation at the drivers door card the materials are in above average shape overall. The flimsy factory wheel has been replaced with a sleeker Nardi unit, which the driver can tilt at will to gain some extra comfort. A/C is cold thanks to a new compressor and the heat is hot, but if you'd like to bring the outside climate in, a massive panoramic moonroof can unfurl along the 5 power windows to create the ultimate open-air driving experience. Pioneer audio serves as a worthwhile upgrade over stock and has MP3 functionality should you choose to play your own tunes. The rear bench is spacious for passengers and folds flat too to make for a hardware store hauler. The headliner is glued tight to the roof and the carpets beneath are in fine shape overall. Save for some wear on the steering wheel and other miscellaneous touch points, it's amazing how well this 30 year old cabin has resisted daily use and abuse in its prior life.

The 3VZ-E under the bonnet is fresh off a recent service and has been given the stamp of approval to dutifully serve its next owner stateside. We bolstered this V6 with a new 12v battery to aid ignition, and replaced the valve cover gaskets so you won't lose a drop through the fresh oil and filter service. The engine air filter and fuel filter were preemptively replaced and serve as a bit of a tune up on this 3.0. Most importantly we knocked out the labor-intensive timing belt and water pump replacement, taking care of a new radiator, spark plugs, and new plug wires while it was in the shop. With the maintenance performed this one rockets up to highway speeds and the automatic gearbox shifts seamlessly after a transmission fluid flush. A selective transfer case is on hand to drop you into 4WD when needed and low gearing can be deployed if you really become entrenched. New shocks were installed all the way around, and after we changed the inner and outer tie rods out for new ones this Surf handles right as rain. The brakes stop confidently, the steering feels strong, and we ditched the tired old Japanese rubber for some all new Falken all terrains. Against the bronze alloys the tires look great, but most importantly they should last for tens of thousands of miles to come!
