In 1994, the Hilux Surf was king of the midsize JDM SUV segment. It's easy to understand why, with its torquey turbo diesel engine and sturdy body-on-frame platform. Models like this SSR-X were not only capable, but practical, efficient, and punchy, too! Finished in a stately Deep Blue Metallic (8E3), and set off by a set of refinished OEM wheels and factory rainguards, the body and paint are in fair shape. There are some dings, chips, and scuffs along with evidence of prior corrosion repair, but as a whole, this rig is still cleaner than most US examples on the market. Fresh off a recent service, this 4x4 is offered with a mere 92k verified and documented miles. In Toyota speak this is barely broken in, as these 1KZ trucks regularly log over half a million miles. Unique and useful, this five-seat Japanese Classic would make for a killer family hauler, weekend trail warrior, or year-round commuter. Turn key and ready to rock, this mean ute is about as cool and collectible as it gets!

The cabin is spacious and has a simple layout like most vehicles of this era. Everything is close by, and the view of the road ahead is clear and commanding. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, which can commonly affect these N130s. Aside from a functional Sony audio upgrade, the interior is just as it left the factory. The functional A/C and heat controls are centrally located, and power windows, door locks, and side mirrors all work as advertised. The gray cloth seats are in above-average condition and lack any major rips, stains, or tears. It's a durable material that stands up to abuse compared to the flimsy cloth that is utilized with other brands. The rear bench has multiple recline settings unlike stateside versions, and the driver benefits from adjustable lumbar and torso support. Aside from a nonfunctional tachometer and some light carpet stains it's really hard to complain about the cabin. It even has the OEM front and rear carpeted mats to protect future spills and stains and the original owner's manuals and two spare keys!

Peeling back the onion, you'll find a simple design of the chassis. Beefy yes, but the utter lack of complication is likely a huge reason why these have stood the test of time. Under the bonnet rests the legendary 1KZ-TE engine. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3.0L churns to life care of two new 12v batteries. New serpentine belts, a new engine air filter, and a new fuel filter assist the four-banger to idle smoothly, and a new valve cover gasket keeps the powerplant sealed up. Power is fed through an automatic transmission to two or four wheels depending on the driver's preference. If things get a little sticky, the selective transfer case includes gearing for low 4WD to get you moving forward. Around town, the Surf really scoots off the line and highway cruising is effortless with all that power. The brakes feel reassured and the power-assisted steering is on point. The N180 factory alloy wheels are wrapped in new all-season tires at all four corners. They look great and reduce road noise, but most importantly they will deliver tens of thousands of miles of grip for years to come. We even replaced the spare tire, too, for some added peace of mind.
