Top Gear famously lauded the Toyota Hilux as standard bearer of SUV reliability. These SUVs are built like tanks, and it's timeless exterior design, rugged diesel drivetrain, and oversize rubber turns this 1993 model into a real over performer. Finished in Black (2Y1), this SSR-X has only 90K original miles. The exterior has been left completely stock, including the OEM brush guards and rain guards. The paint is not only a desirable color, but also in beautiful condition. There are no major flaws to note on the exterior just routine wear, well above average for a vehicle of this vintage.

The interior is in above average condition for a vehicle of this age as well, as it has been well preserved and maintained. Boost yourself up into the cabin using the aluminum running boards and you'll be impressed. The dash is free of fading or cracking, and hasn't been punctured or modified for GPS mounts or gauge packs like many vehicles from Japan. All panels show minimal wear, no trim pieces are missing, and the carpet is stain free. Both front and rear seats are in excellent shape, and are upholstered in a soft, gray and blue combination cloth. The seat bolstering has held up exceptionally well, and the vehicle has a surprisingly comfortable cockpit for long highway cruises. Rear passengers have gobs of legroom, and a bevy of head and legroom. Up top, the headliner is tight and taught, though it does have a few normal scuffs. Best of all, the audio system has been upgraded with a Kenwood unit, and the speakers pump in the tunes, reducing the road noise from the freshly installed Desert Hawk tires. The A/C adds some light cooling to the interior on hot days, supplemented by light privacy tint. Even the rear window rolls down with the touch of a button, supplying some additional ventilation. The front and rear defrost functions, and heat will make the winter months far more bearable. Surprisingly, unlike most JDM vehicles of this era, the front cabin actually contains factory usable cup holders. The gauges all work well and feature some neat features, such as a green light to indicate when the turbo is boosting. That leads us to that wonderful diesel powerplant, and the mechanical overview of this body on frame hauler.

The engine and transmission are also in excellent condition. This 2L-TE turbo diesel is one of the finest engines Toyota has ever developed, and highly desirable. This 2466cc inline four-cylinder mill has gobs of torque and is know to outlast its gasoline counterparts. Its fires right up and idles nicely. An oil service and four new tires have been taken care of by the service staff at Japanese Classics, and complete this Surfs list of required maintenance. The automatic transmission shifts smoothly through the gears, and seem better geared than the 5 speed manual. Toyota TEMP adjustable suspension gives this behemoth a bit more sporty nature, but makes quick work of imperfect city streets. The brakes are confident, and if you choose not to stop on time, that brush guard is sitting up front to protect the bumper skin. 4WD is selective via the transfer case, and it functions without a problem. The platform also features a power button, which holds shift longer keeping the turbo spooled. The tire make some road noise, but the truck tracks straight and, a fifth tire its atop a swing arm on the rear tailgate should you ever have a puncture.

Whether you're climbing the trails at Moab, or simply daily driving to work, the Hilux is a great option. Its legendary durability and iconic 1990's look are special, making this Hilux Surf the ultimate turn-key Japanese Classic.
