Toyota continues to offer great SUVS, but the 1990's really showcased what the brand could do. From the 70 series, which represented the type of vehicle you'd see on safari in Africa, to the massive and luxurious 80 series. Nestling somewhere in between the two, the Hilux SSR-X represents the best of both worlds. Nimble enough to park and get out of its own way, the Hilux seats five comfortably and features a rugged 4WD system and an unstoppable 1KZ-TE turbodiesel. Finished in Toyota's subtle but classy (751) Evergreen, the body is in good shape with only the normal dings and chips associated with daily use. The roof was repainted at some point as you can see where it was taped off at the top of the doors. With it's lifted ride height most nobody would notice unless you go out of your way to point it out. The exterior styling is further accentuated by OEM rain guards, polished IPF brush guard, and aluminum factory running boards. The clear coat is still lustrous, and except for surface scratches gleams in the sunlight. The factory optioned "Surf" graphics that ran down the side were removed at some point leaving some etching in the clear. Up to date on maintenance, and available with only 119K original miles, this go-anywhere Toyota truck has plenty of life left in it.
In a prior life, it is apparent that the Hilux was cared for. Although not brand new, most of the black and gray dash plastics have been replaced with burled wood veneers. Otherwise, the material on the dash is in good shape and is neither discolored or cracker. The headliner, door cards, and carpets are also in above average shape for a vehicle this age. The front buckets, which are trimmed in a soft gray cloth have held up remarkably well. They support both driver and passenger on long cruises and are bolstered reasonably well. The rear bench, which seats three, can be folded away to create a huge loading area, and look like they have barely been sat in. All the switchgear works properly, and all the controls are generally placed well thought the cabin. Of note, a factory sunroof is equipped in this example and fully retracts to add excess ventilation. The A/C and heat work as they should, and upgraded Kenwood head unit with auxiliary input powers the speakers.
Under the bonnet, Toyotas legendary 1KZ-TE 3.0L turbo diesel. The large 4cyl is known for its fuel economy, torque, and reliability. Startup is quick, and with a turn of the key, the diesel jolts to life with the typical clatter. A fresh oil service ensures it stays well lubricated from the next three thousand miles. Acceleration is noticeably quicker than the gas version, and the low-end torque is really helpful in traffic. The automatic transmission shifts well and hustles the SUV up to freeway speeds. The cooling system has been inspected fully and benefits from a newly installed radiator to keep the engine temps in check. The steering is on the light side, as it's power-assisted, and is easy to use. While it doesn't stop like a Supra, the factory calipers do a fine job of slowing this beast down to a complete stop. The factory suspension provides tons of ground clearance and handles large bumps without any complaints. During inclement weather or off-road excursions, the grip is handled by new all-terrain tires. These work in the snow, rain, gravel, and pavement well, and have been mounted by one of our expert technicians.
This off-road icon is fully legal, and up to date on its required services. All it needs is a new driver to share this new chapter of its life with. Lauded for its usefulness, low cost of ownership, timeless styling, the Hilux Surf has lasted the test of time. No matter where your journey takes you, on or off-road, make sure you arrive in a Japanese Classic.
