JDM imported SUVs are really well suited for our US market. Compared to most stateside trucks, they have lower mileage, better features, and improved drivetrains. This 1993 Nissan Safari is one hell of a hauler and is optioned with a locking differential, silky smooth gasoline six-cylinder, and 4WD. Finished in a (2L7) Black over Slate two-tone, the body is in good shape aside from a small dent on the rear bumper and a few scuffs, dings, and chips associated with normal use. This recently serviced, legally imported high-roof model also boasts a third row, power accessories, and aftermarket upgrades. At only 72k original miles, this Japanese Classic is a unique, tough, and capable truck that you can overland daily or take off the beaten path.
The cabin is massive, even without the high roof option. It has dual A/C and a massive panoramic sunroof and power amenities surround the driver everywhere. The view of the road ahead is commanding and this tall truck towers over traffic. The dash is in good shape overall and lacks any cracking or distortion. Like the massive center console, it does have some mounting holes from a prior accessory unit but they are hardly noticeable. The driver receives an adjustable steering column, and power windows, mirrors, and electric locks to make daily driving more convenient. In Japan, the old head unit was swapped out for a newer Kenwood model, which works as it should. The gauges are all clear and easy to read and nighttime driving is aided by a set of Cibie fogs mounted on a polished brush guard. The rest of the controls are at hand, and for a bit more ventilation, the driver can pop open the electric sunroof. It works currently but does occasionally make some unpleasant noises. Still, it lets a bunch of natural light in the cabin and opens up the interior. The gray cloth seats are in good nick overall and lack any major rips, stains, or tears. The same can be said for the headliner which looks impressive. The door cards do note some plastic wear and the carpets have some small stains but overall the cabin looks much better than cars half its age. The rear barn doors open up wide for larger cargo and the roof can be accessed by a polished ladder mounted to the smaller rear door.
The mechanicals are simple and sturdy, as Nissan built these trucks to last. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the TB42 engine starts up promptly thanks to a new 12v battery. It should last for another four years and provide plenty of juice through winter. Our trained techs have also swapped in a new engine air filter to maximize efficiency and power. The 4196cc sump idles smoother than most and is connected to an automatic transmission. The gearbox shifts as it should and the driver has access to a selective transfer case that includes low and hi-4WD settings. The aforementioned locking differential is there as a backup if you encounter some really rough terrain but most folks frankly won't ever use it. The suspension is robust and can handle the rigors of daily use. The power steering is light and easy to manipulate and the brakes feel confident in slowing this heavy, body-on-frame vehicle down to manageable speeds. The three-spoke, silver factory alloys are all wrapped in new Falken rubber at all four comers. The all-terrain tires look killer and can handle all the weather you can throw their way! We even replaced the spare tire as well!
