The Hilux Surf is a useful and rugged midsize SUV. Built upon a truck-based platform known for top tier capability and reliability, this recently serviced rig includes a pricey new timing belt and water pump and is a turn-key Japanese Classic. Set off by a set of refinished champagne colored alloys, privacy tint, and an OEM rear spoiler, this little looker exudes class. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs associated with normal use, the Evergreen Pearl (751) paint is in good nick overall. Boasting a feature-packed cabin with stylized Recaro upholstery, this Toyota is certainly special. As a daily driver, weekend cruiser, or offroad playtoy this SSR-G is as good as it gets!

The cabin was designed in a logical and ergonomic manner. The switchgear is all close by at hand, and the view of the road ahead is clear and commanding. The dash is in good shape aside from some slight blemishes on the passenger side from a nav system that was affixed via tiny screws. The wood grain steering wheel includes controls for the functional OEM cruise control, and conveniently matches the faux woodgrain dash trim. The simple-to-use climate control system blasts piping hot heat and cold A/C, and an American-spec Sony head unit is on hand to blast some tunes with kicker speakers modernizing the sound quality a bit. The Recaro seats steal the show and are the highlight of the interior. They lack any major rips, stains, or tears and are aggressively bolstered to keep those riding up front from sloshing about during spirited driving. The matching material can be found in the door cards, also in good nick. The same can be said for the headliner and carpets, which have been cared for and lack any major abuse. Power windows, locks, and mirrors all work as advertised, and the rear glass powers down in case you have a furry friend in need of some fresh air. It is clear to see the vehicle had been cared for in a prior life and it shows!

Under the hood, the powerful 1KZ-TE engine is fresh off a recent oil and filter service and starts up promptly with a twist of the key thanks to a new 12v battery and fuel filter we replaced. The hearty 3.0L stays topped up on lubricant thanks to a new valve cover gasket and makes tons of torque while remaining fairly efficient. Since the vehicle arrived stateside its had an aluminum radiator installed, new glow plugs, and a fully rebuilt ECU with a lifetime warranty! We didn't stop there as we rebuilt the injection pump, and installed a new timing belt and water pump, and she now runs right as rain. Although the miles are unverified, we feel the powerplant has plenty of life left in it and it pulls strong to redline. The engine is mated to a smooth-shifting automatic gearbox and a selective transfercase. In 2WD the 1KZ has enough power to break the rear loose, but when the going gets rough, the driver can select 4WD to maximize grip. If grip still can't be found you even have a Low 4WD setting that can be engaged. For some added peace of mind, we performed a differential service in which new gear oil was installed. We also performed a fluid service on the transfercase, as well. Highway cruising is comfortable and the midsize SUV is easy to park around the tight confines of a city. The power steering is light and easy to articulate and the brakes feel confident and bite down with force when called upon thanks to a set of new brake pads up front. To complete this lovely truck we installed a set of OEM alloys that were recently refinished with nearly new Falken rubber. The aggressive tire matches the aesthetic and most importantly will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
