The R32 is one of the most iconic models to be produced out of the small island nation of Japan, and the US market is now picking through clean examples to exports. Many first-time JDM customers are unaware that several trim levels of the R32 were produced, and they needn't spend $40K on a GT-R to enjoy the drive of this special chassis. This 1992 GTS25 Type S is in above average condition and offered with only 77K verified miles. Finished in Gun Gray Metallic (KH2,) the body is in good shape other than a few minor dings and paint imperfections associated with normal use. Powered by a reliable and stout 2.5L straight-six coupled to an auto transmission, this two-door delivers silky smooth driving dynamics and some nice interior creature comforts. At a fraction of the price, yet with all the looks of its upmarket siblings, this naturally aspirated gem is an unmolested Japanese Classic!

The interior on most of our Skylines that we retail show much more wear. It's the subtleties we appreciate in this example, for instance, the quality of the interior plastics. Lacking the typical discoloration or weather-induced fading of the typical R32, the interior touch surfaces such as the seats, carpets, and steering wheel are in above average condition. The cloth front buckets are gray in color, and for long commuted feel up to the task of supporting the occupants. The rear bench looks hardly used, and like the front, are devoid of any major rips, tears, or stains. A Kenwood MNA-350 head unit has been fitted to integrate Japanese navigation and auxiliary inputs into the car's audio portfolio. The speakers have decent clarity but pale in comparison to the muscular tone of the inline-six engine. The headliner is upholstered nicely, as are the door cards, and the instrumentation is all functional. The fog lights are also working, and in combination with the factory projection headlamps and skinny A-pillars provide plenty of nighttime visibility.

The clean, angular lines and creases used in the styling of the R32 have aged well over the past three decades, but so have the mechanicals. Gone from production in nearly every brand except BMW, Nissan employed a straight six-cylinder RB25DE to power this chassis. One of the reasons this unit is so loved is its reliability and near vibration-free operation. Startup is a snap, as a new battery aids ignition in these cold winter months. As mentioned the idle is silky, and the 2498cc mill revs freely up to redline. The automatic transmission sends power rearward and sails through the forward gears without any clunks or hesitation. Beyond a routine oil and filter service, our trained technicians have also performed the most expensive service; a new timing belt and water pump give the next owner a breather and won't need to be done for another six years (or 100,000 kilometers.) The brakes and suspension work in unison as the factory designed, and the little two-door stay flat in the corners and can be slowed down to a stop by depressing the left pedal. As a final touch, new tires have been mounted and balanced atop 16" x 7" BBS RSII ET35 rolling stock.

As a weekend toy, first foray into the JDM market, or as a reliable commuter this Skyline fits the bill. Its low cost of ownership, above-average fit and finish, and unique looks are tough to pass up and make this low mileage Type S R32.
