Mitsubishi's Pajero is one of the best Japanese SUVs of the 1980s and '90s. This 1992 example is a sporty and rugged compact SUV, offered with only 59K verified and documented miles. The exterior is finished in a Barbados Blue Metallic (B42) and adorned with a polished grill guard and subtle rear spoiler. Aside from a few minor dings, chips, and scuffs, the body is in good shape. This unique three-door body style sets it apart from the larger version yet still boasts a torquey turbodiesel engine and capable 4WD system. Recently serviced and legally imported this turn-key Japanese Classic is just as good on the tarmac as it is in the sands of Dakkar. For those who value an affordable, distinctive, efficient, and trusty all-weather truck, this Mitsubishi is the perfect fit.

The interior of this Pajero is quite spacious, even for a 2dr SUV. You can comfortably seat four passengers and still have cargo space in the back for your belongings. The seats are trimmed in a light gray cloth that lacks any major rips or tears and is still soft to the touch. The door cards are in good nick with no major damage or blemishes of note. There are some signs of wear on the top of the center console but it is only cosmetic. The factory radio was upgraded to a Carrozzeria head unit to supply all your musical needs. The carpets are clean but have some stains from normal use, and the headliner is clear of any sagging. The dash is in good shape and isn't cracked or distorted like many of these that have been exposed to the elements.  Automatic climate control is standard and this Pajero currently has cold A/C and functional heat. Believe it or not, this compact SUV even has a dedicated rear climate control system, too. If you prefer natural ventilation, you can pop up the sunroof and roll down the power windows. Electric mirrors, power locks, and an adjustable steering column make daily use manageable and all function. The power-folding mirror option however is no longer operable, which doesn't affect usability in the least. The rear seats fold down to add more cargo room when you need it, and some cup holders are located on each side. Overall the cockpit is in good shape, and we believe the previous owner took great care of it.

Powering the Mitsu is the legendary 2.5L 4D56 turbo diesel engine. Thanks to a fresh oil and filter service the next owner needn't schedule any maintenance for another three thousand miles. With a turn of the key, this four-banger starts right up with the assistance of the two new 12V batteries we installed in our shop. To keep them full of juice we also replaced the old alternator with a new one and the 2.5L runs like a champ now. The automatic 4-speed transmission is well suited for the little diesel engine and makes good use of the available power. It shifts seamlessly and sends power through a selective transfer case to two or four wheels depending on the driver's preference. For the off-road die hards, it should be noted that a center locking differential can be engaged if you need to tackle some sand or loose gravel. The suspension handles potholes and road imperfections well, and the predictable nature of the chassis is good at speed and on uneven pavement. The brakes respond to pedal input well, and reassuringly slow down this rig to a stop when you need it. This fun-sized SUV is small enough to be considered maneuverable around town and parking isn't generally an issue with these. To complete the list of services in the shop, we slapped four brand new Falken all-terrain tires on the Pajero. The new rubber quieted down the ride and will surely deliver tens of thousands of miles of year-round grip. By the way, we even replaced the tailgate-mounted spare tire, too.
