1992 HDJ81 Land Cruiser

Stock #6290

The 80 Series is a trusty overlander you can depend on. This 1992 turbodiesel example adds a bit of performance from its spicy 4.2L engine which is also highly efficient. Finished in a classic Bluish Gray (183), this VX Limited is set off by some complimentary 16" gloss black Bridgestone CV928 alloys. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs the paint is in good shape overall. Offered with only 131k verified and documented miles on the ticker, it's fresh as a daisy and barely broken in. The spacious cabin includes some rare features, is in good shape, and the mechanicals are fresh off a recent service. Perfect as a year-round daily driver, cool campsite crawler, or dependable kid ferry this Japanese Classic 4x4 is an SUV that will set you up for success!

The cabin is in above-average shape for a vehicle of this vintage. The driver has a command of the road thanks to the tall ride height and an adjustable steering column allows those behind the wheel to find the ideal driving position. The center console CoolBox keeps libations cold on longer road trips and the front occupants also have seat heaters to toast their rumps. The automatic climate controls are close by and at hand and the automatic system doles out piping hot heat and cold A/C. For more natural ventilation, a large sunroof can be retracted and also opens up the interior with loads of natural light. The windows power down and the electric locks and power mirrors work, making daily use more enjoyable. This Landy even has cruise control! The door cards and headliner are in good nick, as are the carpets. The alcantara seats are in above-average shape. Soft to the touch, the upholstery lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The middle row can tumble forward to accommodate large cargo and the clamshell hatch opens wide for easy loading. That's not to say the cabin is perfect as we wanted to note two slim dash cracks located atop the gauge hood, the power folding mirror function no longer operates, and there's some light scratches on the plastics and soft-touch materials. All in all, the interior is in above average shape and this one even includes the owner's manuals and maintenance booklets, which are stowed in the glovebox.

The ladder chassis and unkillable diesel lend a lot to this chassis. Loved for its durability and efficiency, the 1HD-T is fresh off an oil and filter service and churns to life care of two new 12v batteries. We always replace the fuel filter in any diesel as soon as it gets on the lift, and we also swapped out the air cleaner for a new unit. To keep all that fresh oil internal to the engine one of our trained techs replaced the valve cover gasket. The 4.2L pulls hard to redline and this sizable beast moves quite well. The automatic transmission is a sturdy unit as is the selective transfer case. For low traction scenarios, the driver can engage a center locker and a low-range gearset. The suspension is soft and can handle potholes large and small with confidence thanks to new rear shocks and new front drag links. The brakes were improved with new rear pads and they work nicely when called upon to slow this rig down. The power steering pump was resealed and is light and easy to articulate, making parking a stress-free affair. The 16" alloys are wrapped in new Falken 33" rubber at each corner. Freshly aligned these tires will last for tens of thousands of miles to come and reduce road noise noticeably.
