A timeless sedan with a catalog of rare parts and an airtight reputation, this OEM plus Y32 is one killer Japanese Classic!

Exterior Overview

Nissan’s Y32 is a prolific chassis, and one of the first luxury sport sedans we fell in love with here at the dealership. It’s easy to see why, with examples like this 1991 Cedric Ultima. Decked out in Gunmetal Grey (KH2) this grand tourer has all the options. Set off by OEM rainguards, an IMPUL front lip, a NISMO rear spoiler, and 16″ IMPUL RS alloys, this sedan oozes period correct appeal and shows well, although we wanted to note a prior replacement of the hood and rear passenger door in Japan. Backed by a potent turbocharged V6, this Cedric would make for the perfect Cars & Coffee cruiser, daily commuter, or backroad champ. Interior Overview

For the time, the Y32’s interior was futuristic in many ways, but we think the bespoke Recaro upholstery steals the show. The seats are heated and ventilated, 8 way power adjustable, and are trimmed in a sleek patterned cloth, with leather accents. Keeping with the OEM plus theme, the steering wheel was changed to a MOMO unit exclusive to IMPUL, and feels great in the palm as you pilot this sport sedan down the tarmac. For being well over three decades old, there’s little to complain about in terms of amenities, as both driver and passenger still benefit from a full slate of power equipment. Power windows, locks, and electric side mirrors work as advertised, and a digital automatic climate control unit is on hand to dial in cabin temps at will. Cold A/C helps survive those last dog days of summer, and hot heat isn’t far behind. Adjacent to the HVAC panel, upgraded Pioneer audio works like a charm. Ideal as a comfy commuter, the rear seats can fit a couple extra passengers, and the trunk is gargantuan if you need to lug some groceries around. The headliner is taut against the roof, and the carpets are tidy too. The instrument cluster was swapped for an analog unit, and therefore we cannot verify the current mileage. Still, it’s evident this Cedric was cared for in a prior life, and everything operates as it should.

Mechanical Overview

The VG30DET is a stout unit that shares a good deal of serviceability with USDM Nissans. Ours has the added benefit of a comprehensive recent service here, and it cranks over with haste care of a new 12v battery. An oil and filter service keeps you up to date on maintenance intervals, and we replaced the engine air filter and fuel filter with new units for a bit of a tune up. We chucked in six new spark plugs to assist combustion, and took care of an oil leak at the valve covers with new gaskets too. With the maintenance performed, this saloon sails up to highway speeds and an automatic gearbox makes quick work of handling the VG’s impressive powerband, with a new pan gasket keeping any gearbox fluid from escaping. It’s also worth noting the IMPUL muffler, which is rare as hen’s teeth. The factory suspension is soft and compliant, and makes around-town driving a breeze. The power steering is also light and direct, and grip is handled on all four corners by good Bridgestone rubber. Knee deep in tread, you’ll be covered for the road ahead so your next roadtrip goes unhampered in this head turning Cedric!
