Exterior Overview
We are Hilux Surf fanboys here at the dealership. The performance, capability, and reliability are tough to match at the price point we retail them for. This Evergreen Pearl over Silver (751) 1997 model is special, as it was spec’d with the most desirable engine and 4WD system. Fresh off a recent service, this intercooled diesel model is turnkey and ready to roll. Even better, the 58k miles on the ticker are documented and verified. Adorned with a sport hood, OEM spare tire swingarm, OEM spoiler, OEM 16″ alloys, and a neat factory graphics package, this 4×4 is easy on the eyes. Efficient, reliable, and collectible, this Japanese Classic can be a daily driver, wheeled in Moab, or pressed into service as a dedicated overlander. A jack of all trades, this terrific Toyota is everything you could want in a midsize SUV.
Interior Overview
The cabin is in good shape and is nicely optioned. Once inside, the driver is greeted with a tilt-adjustable steering column and optional adjustable lumbar support so that they can find the ideal piloting position. The contoured dashboard lacks any cracking, fading, or distortion, and dual SRS airbags are standard equipment. The center stack is close by and within arm’s reach. The OEM audio works like a charm, as does the automatic climate control system mounted above. The A/C is ice cold, and the heat is piping hot, ensuring you can enjoy this truck year-round. Power folding mirrors, power locks, and power side and rear glass work as they should, as well. The seats are upholstered in a durable Moonmist cloth. The material lacks any major rips, stains, or tears and is mirrored in the door cards, which have resisted major abuse. The rear row has the ability to split-fold, 4-way recline, and tumble forward to create a large cargo loading area. The headliner is in good shape, as are the carpets, and the steering wheel is nearly mint. Even an OEM field monitor was optioned, which delivers useful info about the outside conditions should you lose cell service. Other rare options include a power backup mirror, which unfurls from the rear spoiler with the press of a button. We even have the OEM carpet mats, owner’s manuals, and maintenance booklets on hand for the new purchaser.
Mechanical Overview
The body on frame platform is sturdy, and the same can be said for the intercooled 1KZ-TE powerplant. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3.0L churns to life with the twist of the key courtesy of two new 12v batteries. A new fuel filter and engine air filter were replaced as soon as it got onto our lift. To refresh the 1K, one of our trained techs replaced the valve cover gasket with a new one. The four-banger runs right as rain and is linked to a strong automatic gearbox. It makes good use of the turbodiesel’s torque curve and hustles up to highway speeds without breaking a sweat. A fresh front differential fluid service ensures the power makes it to the ground smoothly. The pilot can choose to toggle between 2WD and 4WD on the fly. For off-road excursions, a low range and center locker are on hand. A host of work was done to the suspension so that this rig rides well. New front lower control arms, rear upper control arms, front shocks, and front sway bar links and bushings were swapped out. The power steering system was completely rehabbed as well. The rack was rebuilt, new seals swapped in, and new rack bushings and boots replaced. A fresh alignment was then performed with new inner and outer tie rods, which will maximize the life of the new 31″ Falken tires. ABS brakes are standard, and the truck has no issues being reeled in from higher speeds. Turn key and ready to rock, this low mileage truck is a rare find, and one heck of a Hilux!
