This 1999 TZ model is a well-rounded truck, as you might expect, as it was the precursor to our beloved Lexus. It has an upscale cabin and offers decent ride quality, yet is underpinned by a capable center-locked 4WD system and ladder chassis. Finished in a classic Millennium Silver (K73), this tough Toyota is set off by a rare OEM hard shell spare tire cover, refinished OEM alloy wheels, an OEM bash bar, OEM rainguards, and chrome door handles and mirror caps. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs, the paint is in good shape, and this rig is fresh off a recent service. Boasting only 80k verified and documented miles on the clock, this terrific Toyota has tons of life left in it! Interior Overview
The cabin is in above-average nick, has seating for eight, and loads of factory upgrades. As a TZ model, an optional adjustable lumbar support makes long slogs easy to manage. Drivers of all sizes benefit from a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. The dashboard is in good shape and lacks any age-related UV damage, cracks, or distortion. Dual SRS airbags are standard, and the dashboard also houses an optional OEM field monitor. Off-roaders love this display as it relays important information about the vehicle and outside conditions to those within the cockpit. Below is a simple-to-use OEM audio system that supplies tunes to supplement your commute. It sits adjacent to the automatic climate control system. Ready to motor in all four seasons, the Prado doles out ice-cold A/C and piping hot heat should you need a break from the weather. If you prefer more natural ventilation, a large moonroof can tilt or retract. The rear quarter glass pops outward to add additional airflow, and the electric windows work as they should. Power folding mirrors and electric locks work in typical Toyota fashion, too, making daily use more manageable. The seats are trimmed in a durable gray and blue cloth. They are in above-average shape and lack any major blemishes. The door cards also look good and include the same matching upholstery. The rear middle row has a few tricks up its sleeve. The seatback reclines, split folds, and tumbles forward to create a flat loading floor. The headliner, door cards, and carpets have withstood the past 25 years without sustaining major abuse, and aside from some steering wheel wear, this Cruiser’s cabin is in remarkable shape.
Mechanical Overview
This V6-powered truck is easy to service, as this durable engine was sold here in the USA. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3.4L cranks over with haste courtesy of a new 12v battery. A proper tune up was performed as soon as it got onto our lift. New spark plugs, a new engine air filter, and a set of accessory belts were installed right off the bat. So the oil level remains full, one of our trained techs has replaced the valve cover gaskets with new ones. With the 5VZ-FE running tip top, we focused our attention on the driveline. The automatic gearbox received new shifter bushings and a transmission fluid service. The four-speed shifts just as it should, making good use of the 3.4L midrange punch. Torque is fed to both axles courtesy of a full time 4WD system. A low range 4WD is on hand for all your off-roading exploits, as is a locking center differential. To bolster the driveline, we greased the driveshafts and U-joints, and this Prado puts the power to the ground properly. The long wheelbase aids high-speed stability, and new front lower ball joints, front lower control arms, and front sway bar end links were installed so it could ace its Virginia state safety inspection. We also refurbished the power steering system. The rack was rebuilt with new seals. We flushed the fluid and added new rack bushings and boots as well. The system now functions as it should, and it is light and easy to articulate. We aligned this truck with new inner and outer tie rods and then proceeded to mount and balance four new Falken tires at each corner. Ready to get down and hit the open road, this tenacious Toyota simply needs a new owner!
