Exterior Overview
When the end times are near, rest assured that the 100 Series Land Cruiser will be ready to be mustered into service. These rigs have a reputation for being unkillable, and this 1998 is no exception. Finished in a fresh coat of Dover White Pearl (W69), this VX Limited is set off by an OEM spare tire swingarm, spare tire cover, a tow receiver, OEM spoiler, Terzo crossbars, new ICON wheels, and some aggressive privacy tint. Aside from a noted driver fender replacement, the body is in good shape, aside from some minor imperfections. Fresh off a comprehensive service, this 4×4 is offered with a meager 119k verified and documented miles on the clock. Ideal as a comfortable daily driver, this V8-powered wonder would also make for a beautiful beach cruiser or overlanding all-star. A Japanese Classic should be reliable, safe, durable, and practical, and this terrific Toyota unequivocally ticks every one of those boxes!
Interior Overview
The cabin is filled with premium materials, and space is abundant. Drivers of all sizes can find the ideal seating position courtesy of an adjustable steering column and power-adjustable lumbar support. The dashboard lacks any cracking or distortion, and dual SRS airbags are standard for this vehicle. Functional power folding mirrors, electric locks, and power windows make daily use more enjoyable. For those hot days, the automatic climate control system pumps in cold A/C, and the heat is piping hot for the winter ahead. If you prefer more natural ventilation, the rear quarter glass pops outward, and a large OEM panoramic moonroof can tilt or retract with the press of a button. The center stack is close by and within arm’s reach. A large touchscreen Eclipse headunit funnels some tunes into the cabin and looks great. The tan seats are protected by upscale Clazzio leather seat covers. They look great and break up the cabin’s tan color palette. The rear row can also recline, split fold, and tumble forward to create a large, massive cargo area. The headliner and carpets are in fine shape, and aside from some tiny slits on both driver side door panels, it’s hard to critique the cabin as it was clearly cared for overseas.
Mechanical Overview
This body on frame beast is nearly bulletproof, and the same can be said for the 2UZ-FE V8 under the hood. Future fluid checks are a stress-free affair as new hood shocks have been swapped out to replace the old ones. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 4.7L churns to life with the twist of a key courtesy of a new 12V battery. A set of spark plugs, coilpacks, a new engine air filter, and a new fuel filter were immediately installed as part of our tune-up. So that this Cruiser stays on top of thermal management, we replaced the radiator and performed a coolant flush. The DOHC mill runs right as rain and pulls hard to redline. Torque is fed through a stout automatic gearbox to both axles through a full time 4WD system. It gets up to highway merging speeds without breaking a sweat, and when you need to slow down, large disc brakes and ABS have your back. The pedal feel was improved with a brake fluid flush, as well. We refreshed the driveline with new front axles and new front axle seals. If you plan to motor off the beaten path, a center locking differential and low-range 4WD can be engaged. The OEM optional AHC suspension rides well and can handle the rigors of daily use and abuse. The long wheelbase distributes road imperfections well and insulates nicely from uneven road surfaces. One of our trained techs completely overhauled the power steering system. We rebuilt the rack, flushed the fluid, and installed new rack bushings and boots. Lastly, we mounted and balanced four new 33″Falken tires at each corner. Freshly aligned, the new rubber looks mean, quells road noise, and should last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
