Enthusiasts laud the 80 series for being capable as a daily driver, while also decimating off the beaten path, and our 1992 is a Japanese Market example with some neat factory options that only get better with age.

Exterior Overview

Toyota’s 80 series marked the last of the “true” land cruisers, with beefy, boorish body lines, solid axle underpinnings, and unkillable full-time 4WD. Enthusiasts laud the 80 series for being capable as a daily driver, while also decimating off the beaten path, and our 1992 is a Japanese Market example that only gets better with age. Finished in Earth Metallic (4Z1), the cosmetics are wild, set off by a new Bilstein lift, Modellista side steps, an OEM dealer option roof basket, LED tail lamps, and a set of slick Bridgestone split six-spoke alloys. Save for some nicks, scuffs, and dings in the paint, the cosmetics are no worse for the wear, and the 92k verified miles on this Cruiser do a lot to back up its condition, although we wanted to note the rear bumper was previously replaced in Japan. Underpinned by an indestructible inline six, this FZJ80 shares parts with American models, making stateside ownership a cinch. Toyota was killing it in the 90’s, and this Japanese Classic is an excellent example of why.

Interior Overview

There’s a lot to love about the 80 series’ interior. Spacious seating, a full slate of power amenities, and ample head and legroom to make all passengers comfortable and satisfied. Finished in a sport suede cloth, the seats show no major defects outside of some typical age-related pilling. Also in good nick is the vinyl wrapped dash, which has resisted any major cracks or fading over the years. It frames the center stack, which houses a simple to use automatic climate control unit, that doles out hot heat and ice cold A/C courtesy of a new compressor. Also climate controlled, surprisingly, is the center console, which features a coolbox that can chill your libations, and a factory ice maker. Adjacent to the HVAC is OEM audio, which sounds decent for its vintage. For an accessible driving experience, the pilot gains access to a full slate of power windows, locks, and power mirrors. There’s even a large power moonroof mounted centrally. To expand the cargo hold, the middle bench can fold forward and latch into place. The headliner is taut against the roof, and the plush shag-like carpeting has stood up to a few decades of use without succumbing to excess wear and tear. Overall, for a chassis that’s typically prone to excessive wear and tear, this 80’s condition really impresses, and the previous owner was kind enough to leave behind the factory owner’s manual!

Mechanical Overview

The 1FZ-FE under the bonnet is a stout unit, and these big block inline sixes consistently show no signs of quitting. Ours is fresh off a recent service for the road ahead, and cranks over swiftly, care of a new 12v battery and alternator we installed to keep the juice flowing. Thermal management is handled courtesy of a new radiator, thermostat, and heater valve. Of course, new coolant was flushed in as part of the service, too. We also addressed the ignition system, with a new distributor cap and rotor, spark plug wires, and plugs themselves. We installed a new fuel pump to keep the petrol flowing, and a new engine air filter and fuel filter were installed as part of a basic tune-up. With the maintenance performed, this truck sails up to highway speeds with ease, and sends power straight to a stout automatic gearbox. We flushed the gearbox with new fluid and a filter, and resealed the transmission pan for good measure. The 4WD system is one of Toyota’s best designs to date, and we rebuilt both front hubs with new bearings and seals to keep it that way. The suspension benefits from new Bilstein 5100 shocks on all four corners, and new front panhard bar bushings. For a big behemoth, the Cruiser rides like a cloud and the power steering is surprisingly agile. The brakes stop on a dime, and we wrapped the aftermarket alloys in fresh rubber. Freshly aligned, this super Cruiser checks literally every box, and is a masterpiece on wheels!
