Exterior Overview
Durable, handsome, and capable, the Toyota Hilux Surf is the king of the hill for midsize SUVs. This Suzuka Gray (LX7N) example is also highly prized for its powerplant, the 1KZ-TE turbodiesel. This resilient four-banger is efficient, powerful, and easy to service, which is why we sell so many of these trucks. Adorned by a set of refinished OEM 16″ alloys, an aggressive spoiler, OEM rainguards, and an OEM spare tire swingarm, this Hilux has some serious curb appeal. Aside from some small imperfections, the body is in good shape, and this rig is fresh off a recent service. At only 106k verified and documented miles on the clock, this SSR-G model is barely broken in. Ideal as a Cars & Coffee cruiser, a fun family hauler, or a dedicated weekend overlander, this Japanese Classic is up to the task.
Interior Overview
The Surf features a simple yet ergonomic cabin. Dual SRS airbags are standard, too, if you plan on transporting friends and family. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and the center stack and door cards are accentuated with faux wood grain trim. A Dual hedunit was installed here in the shop and includes Bluetooth integration so you can keep your eyes safely on the road ahead. Other factory upgrades include an OEM field monitor and a sizable OEM sunroof that delivers a light breeze and abundant natural light. The automatic climate control system feeds the cabin cold A/C and piping hot heat. The seats are upholstered in a moon mist gray cloth. Mirrored in the door cards, the seating surfaces lack any major rips, stains, or tears. The driver benefits from adjustable lumbar support and a tilt-adjustable steering column. The rear bench also 4-way reclines, split folds, and tumbles forward to create a flat loading floor. Aside from some punctures on the rear seatback carpet, and wear on the steering wheel, the cabin is hard to nitpick, and we have included the owner’s manual, maintenance booklet, and spare key are included with the purchase of this terrific Toyota.
Mechanical Overview
Built atop a ladder chassis, this rough and tumble truck can take a lickin’ and keep on tickin’! Equally as robust is the 1KZ-TE engine, which is fresh off an oil and filter service. It springs to life immediately care of two new 12v batteries, and a new intake air filter and a new fuel filter were a part of the tune-up the Surf received. We also rehabbed the 1K with a new valve cover gasket and half moon seal so all the dinosaur juice stays internal to the engine. A set of new accessory belts keeps the electronics properly powered, and we also flushed out the coolant so that the 3.0L stays on top of thermal management. The four-banger creates gobs of low-down twist and feeds torque through a stout automatic transmission. It shifts like a champ, and the pilot can toggle between 2WD and 4WD on the fly. Even better, for off-road escapades, a low range and center locking differential can be utilized. This rig is a comfortable highway cruiser, and the suspension is predictable and offers loads of ground clearance. For state inspection, we replaced the right rear axle seal and also replaced the front sway bar links, as they were worn. The power steering system was completely refreshed. We started off by rebuilding the pump, and then we rebuilt the rack itself. New rack bushings were installed, the system flushed, and a new boot added. So the new owner could easily dial in a proper alignment, we installed new inner and outer tie rods for buttery smooth adjustments. Lastly, we mounted and balanced four new 31″ Falken tires. Freshly aligned, the new rubber looks mean, quells road noise, and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come. Turn key and ready to rock, this truck is versatile, practical, and as capable as they get!
