Exterior Overview
A top-tier Surf like this 1999 should be prized. Powered by the most desirable engine, an intercooled 1KZ-TE, and underpinned by class-leading 4WD, this truck is capable, reliable, and efficient. It’s also a looker, with its scooped hood, aftermarket 16″ alloys, aggressive rear spoiler, privacy tint, and OEM rainguards. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs, the Stellar Blue over Gray (8L7) paint is in good shape, and this terrific Toyota is fresh off a recent service and offered with only 121k verified and documented miles on the ticker. Easy to live with, safe, and spacious, this SSR-G model does just about everything well. Comfortable on the trail, interstate, and beach, this Japanese Classic would make for a wonderful daily driver or killer weekend cruiser!
Interior Overview
These SSR-G models are always well optioned, and the cabin includes a few upgrades and niceties not found in base trim. One of the highlights is a built-in 100V wall plug so you can power your blender or charge your iPad. The Eclipse touchscreen audio was also installed in Japan. It looks modern and pipes plenty of tunes through the cabin, enhancing your road trip! The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading and dual SRS airbags are standard, as are ABS brakes, for those who may be safety conscious. Daily use is made more enjoyable courtesy of functional power folding mirrors, electric locks, and power windows. The rear window powers down too, supplementing airflow. Other neat factory upgrades include a power under mirror which pops down from the rear spoiler to provide a view of the parking behind the rear bumper. The driver can find the ideal seating position, courtesy of a tilt adjustable steering column and optional adjustable lumbar support. The rear occupants also enjoy some amenities, and unlike American 4Runners, their seatbacks 4-way recline for optimum comfort. For additional storage needs, the rear seatbacks split fold and the whole assembly also tumbles forward and creates a flat loading floor. The blue and gray cloth is durable and lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The matching material can be found in the door cards, which are in equally good nick. Aside from some light headliner and carpet stains and some driver’s bolster wear, it’s clear that this Hilux was cared for overseas. Even the owners manuals are included with the purchase of this truck!
Mechanical Overview
Body on frame and built to last, the 1KZ-TE engine is an appropriate engine to power this rig. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3.0L cranks over with haste courtesy of two new 12v batteries. A proper tune up was in order and a new fuel filter, engine air filter, and serpentine belts were installed as soon as it got onto the lift. To ensure the oil level stays full, we resealed the valve cover gasket, and the four banger feels healthy as a horse. Power is sent to the rear wheels or both axles, depending on the driver’s preference and the gearbox shifts properly and is geared nicely at highway speeds. For the off road crowd, a center locker and low range can be engaged to make trips through the sand or mud feel like child’s play. To keep the power to the ground, we flushed the rear differential. The tremendous torque makes cruising stoplight to stoplight a blast and the ABS brakes feel confident having been bolstered with new front brake lines, new front brake rotors, and new front brake pads. The ride quality is decent for a truck and we have replaced the rear upper and lower control arms for state inspection. The power steering is direct and on point, as we freshly aligned the platform with new inner and outer tie rods, and new front sway bar bushings. The aftermarket wheels are wrapped in brand new Falken tires. The new rubber looks mean, quells road noise, and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
