Exterior Overview
A proper estate needs no introduction, and this do-it-all Toyota is one heck of a cool hauler. This 2000 Crown Athlete is luxurious, fun, and frugal to operate too. Finished in a classic Crystal White Pearl (062) the cosmetics are in good shape overall, and a set of OEM rainguards and polished Aristo alloys round off the aesthetic. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs, the body is in good nick and the 121k miles on the odometer are verified and documented. Fresh off a recent service including a new timing belt and water pump, this safe and smooth Athlete would make for a unique family hauler, wicked weekend cruiser, or trustworthy daily driver. Built during the brand’s golden era of production, this useful Japanese Classic is the type you pass down from generation to generation!
Interior Overview
The cabin is spacious, filled with premium materials, and includes some impressive electric amenities. The driver and passenger both benefit from standard dual SRS airbags, and the dashboard features a swept design that lacks any cracking or fading. The steering wheel tilts and telescopes, and daily driving is made more enjoyable thanks to functional heated power folding side mirrors, electric locks, and electric windows. The A/C system is a marvel in itself. Sure, it’s neat that it’s a digital readout, but the center vents oscillate back and forth, which is sure to impress any automotive enthusiast. The heat and A/C do function properly and the controls are simple to operate. The OEM audio system uses the same infotainment control and pumps in some tunes to supplement your commute. The seats are in above average shape and lack any major rips, stains or tears. The gray cloth upholstery is durable, too and on longer road trips they feel supportive. The door cards are in good shape, and are adorned with classy suede inserts. The headliner and carpets are in good shape, and the cargo area has been well cared for. The OEM security shade is on hand, and even the owners manuals and maintenance booklets are included in the purchase! That’s not to say this 25 year old cabin is perfect, as we wanted to note the display screen has spots of fading. It works like a charm though, and does little to take away the value of this lovely Crown.
Mechanical Overview
A premium estate deserves a premium engine, and the 1JZ-GE is up to the task. The 2.5L whirrs to life silently and benefits from a new 12V battery. And oil and filter service was performed, and we replaced the engine air filter so that the 1J can breathe freely. Six new spark plugs have been chucked in to properly combust fuel, too. So that the oil level stays on full, new valve covers were installed, and we replaced the front main and cam seals while we were in there. Best of all, a new timing belt and water pump service was taken care of, which will last the owner another ten years. The 2.5l was flushed out with new coolant, and after the maintenance was performed, the Crown was thoroughly road tested to earn our final stamp of approval. The six cylinder is linked to a stout automatic gearbox. It shifts smoothly, and this Crown gets up to highway merging speeds in a jiffy. It also slows down well, thanks to standard ABS and new front brake pads and rotors. The suspension and steering were totally overhauled while on the lift. New adjustable coilovers were installed, and we rebuilt the steering rack with all new seals. New front lower ball joints and front caster arms were installed before its state inspection and new inner and outer tie rods allowed us to dial in a proper alignment. The Aristo chrome alloys are wrapped in all new tires. Turn key and ready to rock, this special Toyota does everything well, and looks damn good doing it!
