Exterior Overview
Boxy, economical, and built like a tank, the Toyota bB was among one of the brand’s most important designs in the early aughts. Its styling was distinctly Japanese, yet was popular enough to catch on in America, where it was later brought stateside as the Scion xB. Our 2000 model is a clean example, optioned from the factory with all wheel drive and a zippy 1.5l engine. It’s also easy on the eyes, with clean Black (202) paintwork, a factory lip kit, an optional rear bumper applique, OEM rainguards, and TRD alloy wheels. Save for a few chips, dings, and spots of paint fade and a replacemnt hatch, the cosmetics are in above average shape for a 25 year old vehicle, and the 97k miles on the clock are verified, documented, and indicate the 1NZ engine is barely broken in. Offering up an abundance of space, and a compact frame for unparalleled around-town utility, this bB is a Japanese Classic, and a winner through and through.
Interior Overview
Affectionately referred to as a “toaster on wheels”, this bB is more than meets the eye. It’s outrageously spacious inside, offering ample head and legroom, and even flat folding seating, to increase utility or sleeping space. Entry to the cabin is easy, and optional chrome door sills protect your paintwork from scuffs. The upholstery is crafted from a tidy mesh cloth, free from stains or tears, and the headliner, carpets, and dash plastics are black to match. The dash cover has resisted any serious damage, cracks, or UV fading. It assumes a prominent position up front and includes a few utility trays to house your belongings. It also houses dual SRS airbags, for safety conscious occupants. The driver can get comfortable behind a tilt adjustable steering column, and centrally mounted instrumentation is easy to read. The center stack sports an easy to use automatic climate control unit, and upgraded Clarion audio. The sound quality is good for its age, and features an aux port if you want to play your own tunes. Power windows, locks, and mirrors assist daily use, although the driver’s mirror no longer power folds. The rear bench is about the most spacious thing we sell in this segment, and it can fold forward if you need to expand the cargo hold in the rear. To protect your investment, the factory carpet mats have been retained, and aside from some adhesive marks on the dash cover, this cockpit really gets the job done!
Mechanical Overview
The 1NZ-FE under the hood was widely used in a variety of Toyota vehicles, making parts acquisition a breeze here in the USA. It also helps that the chassis has a direct US equivalent. To sweeten the deal even more, our trained technicians have given this bB a thorough once-over, starting with a fresh oil and filter service. We repaired a leaking valve cover gasket, and replaced some worn-out serpentine belts with new units. This economical four-banger shoots up to highway speeds with ease, and an automatic gearbox throws power to all four wheels with haste. A fresh transmission fluid flush keeps the auto box in good working order, and shifts are reliable. We did a bit of drivetrain and suspension rehab to help it pass with flying colors, and we replaced all the struts and installed new front swaybar links. The steering is feather weight and easy to maneuver, and we bolstered the ABS brakes with new front pads and rotors, and rear shoes. The last line of defense between you and the pavement, the 18″ TRD Racing Hart Evolution wheels were wrapped in fresh rubber, and the little runabout tracks dead straight after we performed a fresh alignment!
