Exterior Overview
Elegant, fast, and reliable, the Aristo is a super saloon if we have ever seen one. Abundant luxury appointments, oodles of space, and a fire-breathing twin turbo Supra engine are a lovely combination, and we think the buyer of this terrific Toyota will agree. Finished in White Frost Mica (062), this Vertex edition is subtly set off by LED tail lights, OEM rainguards, and 17″ Altezza sport design alloys. Aside from a few scuffs, chips, and dings, the paint is in good shape, and this five-seater is fresh off a recent service that included a new timing belt and water pump. Offered with a scant 75k verified and documented miles, this model year 2000 is in better nick than vehicles half its age. Collectible, practical, and cool, this special tourer is a certified Japanese Classic and one heck of a deal!
Interior Overview
The cabin is covered in electric equipment and includes several important safety features and creature comforts. Dual front and side airbags are standard, and add some peace of mind for those riding up front. The driver can find the ideal driving position thanks to an electric tilt-adjustable steering column. The switchgear is all close by and easy to reach, and the steering wheel-mounted OEM cruise control makes interstate travel more bearable. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and a large central touchscreen controls most of the climate and audio functions. Both systems work like a charm, and it should be noted that this example was spec’d with the JBL factory audio upgrade. The other notable option is the black leather upholstery. Aside from normal wear and tear, the cowhides are in good shape and add some contrast to the cabin. Both power front buckets are powered and also come with integrated factory seat heaters. Power windows, power locks, and power folding mirrors all work in typical Toyota fashion, making daily use more enjoyable. It should also be mentioned how quiet the cabin is, and it appears to be completely devoid of any squeaks or rattles. The headliner and door cards, and carpet are in good shape, and aside from a non-functional telescoping feature on the steering column, it’s hard to complain about the cabin. Even the rare and expensive OEM carpet mats are included with the deal!
Mechanical Overview
Under the hood is a silky smooth inline six with a couple of turbos bolted to get the juices flowing. The 2JZ-GTE is a legendary engine, and is known for its ability to make massive numbers without swapping out the internals. This stock version comes to life with the twist of a key thanks to a new 12V battery. The 3.0L is fresh off an oil and filter service as well, so there will be no need to schedule a maintenance visit for another 3,000 miles. Even better, we addressed a couple of pesky oil leaks and fashioned new cam seals, new valve cover gaskets, and rebuilt the VVTi gear. While we were in there, it made sense to do a new timing belt and water pump service, which will last for ten years and 100,000 additional kilometers. New coolant and a brand new thermostat were also taken care of as a part of the service and we installed a new set of spark plugs to properly combust the fuel. The 2J pulls hard to redline and feeds power to the rear wheels courtesy of a stout automatic gearbox. The Aristo sails up to highway speeds and is stable on the freeway. New caster arms were replaced for state inspection and we freshly aligned the chassis. The ABS brakes perform well and benefit from new pads up front. The Altezza alloys have all been wrapped in new all season rubber. The new tires will last for tens of thousands of miles to come and reduce road noise even further on this OEM plus sport sedan!
