Exterior Overview
The details matter, and every once in a while, a Hilux Surf comes through that is special. This 1999 is a one owner, and features the most desirable engine, the intercooled 1KZ-TE turbodiesel. Complemented by a spacious and safe cabin, it has numerous rare options and upgrades. For instance, the body is adorned by OEM chrome mirror caps, door handles, and bumpers for an added touch of class. The scooped hood, refinished 16″ OEM alloys, OEM rainguards, and impossible-to-find optional translucent spoiler complete the upscale aesthetic. Aside from a few minor dings, chips, and scuffs the Millenium Silver (K73) paint is in good shape and this SSR-X is fresh off a recent service. Boasting only 116k verified and documented miles on the clock, this 4×4 is barely broken in. Clean, collectible, and easy to service, it’s no wonder this is our best-selling Japanese Classic. Ready for daily use or a trip to the trailhead, this efficient, powerful, and capable Surf ticks every box imaginable!
Interior Overview
The cabin is in wonderful nick and was obviously cared for overseas. The driver can find the ideal driving position with an adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. The dashboard is designed ergonomically and lacks any cracking, fading, or distortion. Dual SRS airbags are standard for those who value safety, as are ABS brakes. The center stack includes a simple-to-use digital automatic climate control system. The heat is piping hot and the air conditioner is on standby for the summer ahead. Below a Kenwood headunit pipes in the tunes and sounds decent for a vehicle of this vintage. Power windows, power locks, and power mirrors all work in typical Toyota fashion making daily use more enjoyable. The blue and black textured upholstery steals the show and is in above-average condition. The pattern is incredible and the durable material lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The matching material can be found in the door cards and is in equally good nick. The rear bench can split fold and also tumble forward to create a flat loading floor. If you have any long 2×4’s in tow from a run to Lowes, the hatch glass can power down to provide some extra space. The carpets and headliner have held up throughout the years without sustaining major abuse and even the owner’s manuals and maintenance booklets are in the glovebox for the new owner to enjoy.
Mechanical Overview
The body on frame platform is sturdy and the 1KZ-TE under the hood has a reputation for its bulletproof nature. Even better, this iteration of the engine is intercooled, which reduces EGTs and increases power output. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3.0L churns to life care of two new 12v batteries. We installed a new fuel filter while the oil service is performed, as it is our standard procedure. The 1K makes gobs of low-end power and is linked to a stout automatic gearbox that shifts just as it should. It gets up to highway speeds quickly and is fun from stoplight to stoplight. The driver can direct power to the rear axle or both with a selectable transfercase. A center locking differential was spec’d on this example, which is a big draw for the off-road die-hards. A low range can also be engaged when you need the extra grip. The handling is also much more connected than our run-of-the-mill SUV. For a truck it’s almost nimble and the Surf reacts to steering and braking inputs quickly. When you need to slow down in a jiffy, all you need to do is jab the brakes. New front brake pads and rotors were installed to keep stopping distances short. The power steering is direct and this rig goes right where you point it thanks to a fresh alignment. The 16″ wheels are all wrapped in brand-new 31″ Falken rubber. Turn key and ready to rock, this is one of the cleanest Hilux Surfs in recent memory and we feel the new American owner will agree.
