Exterior Overview
1999 marked the end of an era for Nissan as they capped off the Z32 Fairlady Z’s near decade-long production run. That’s not to say they didn’t go out with a bang, as this 1999 Version R is chock full of rare options and enough factory goodies to make any Nissan enthusiast swoon. One of 130 GCZ32 examples (428 total JDM Z’s) that rolled off the production line in Midnight Purple (LP2), and the exterior of this rare Z is set off by an updated front fascia, xenon headlamps, kouki tail lamps, and a slick set of 19″ Rays G16 alloys. Showing only a few swirls, dings, and miscellaneous defects from 25 years on the road, this Z is a looker overall and is primed to turn plenty of heads at your weekend cars and coffee or Nissan cruise in. We also wanted to note a prior replacement of the left rear quarter, and rear bumper but that does little to take away the desirability of this chassis. With 56k verified miles on the clock, this Fairlady has tallied a fraction of what our stateside examples see and the twin-turbo powerplant under the hood has loads of good preventative maintenance performed for the road ahead. A JDM sports car icon that looks good and performs even better, this 300ZX is a textbook Japanese Classic and one of our favorite cars of all time!
Interior Overview
The OEM Recaro interior is a standout option in this Version R, and it’s evident by the condition this example was well cared for in a prior life. Set off by OEM optional carbon fiber trim, the interior materials are in good nick overall and the dash has resisted any major UV damage, cracking, or peeling over the years. The center stack houses functional touch screen Carrozzeria audio, with plenty of throwback tunes loaded into the hard drive to soundtrack your backroad cruises. Mounted within arm’s reach, a desirable manual climate control unit is easy to operate and cold A/C is on tap for when you need it most. If you prefer a more open air experience, the T-tops pop off and stow away in the trunk. The 2+2 configuration can cram a couple extra passengers in the rear if needed although most enthusiasts will opt to make the most of the large hatch space out back. Power windows, locks, and electric folding side mirrors aid daily use, and we even retained the factory carpet mats as they were in great shape and should do a lot to protect this masterpiece of an interior.
Mechanical Overview
The VG30DETT under the hood is a legend in its own right, and with Nissan debuting the current Z with a twin turbocharged V6, we’d say they were on to something! Ours has the added benefit of a comprehensive recent service, where we plopped in a new 12v battery to ensure reliable ignition for years to come. From there, an oil and filter service was performed and this 3.0 doesn’t leak a drop! A new fuel filter keeps pesky contaminants out of your petrol, and we replaced both air intake filters to ensure rapid and reliable acceleration. Records from Japan also indicate a timing belt replacement within the last 20k kilometers, which should make the next owner confident this one was well cared for in a prior life. This VG soars to highway speeds with haste, and an Apex’i catback accentuates the exhaust note nicely. The 5 speed manual is easy to operate and selects gears without any unwanted hitches or grinds. To maximize potential in the twisties, we installed all new front upper control arms, and performed a fresh alignment to get the most out of the drivetrain work. Tein coilovers keep the chassis planted and eliminate any unsightly wheel gap, and the power steering is easy to articulate too! The brakes are bolstered by new pads and rotors all the way around, and the Rays alloys are wrapped in some aggressive Advan AD08 rubber. Typical of old Nissans, we did want to note some light lifter tick on cold start that goes away while driving. Still, the engine is in great health and we’ve done our due diligence to ensure this Japanese Classic is primed and ready for tens of thousands of miles to come!
