Beloved for so many reasons, this 1997 Hilux Surf is one wonderful rig. Propelled by a stout and powerful intercooled turbodiesel and advanced 4WD system, this SUV is a top performer. It's also highly practical, with numerous standard safety systems and tons of interior space for kids, friends, and cargo. Finished in a Stellar Blue over Gray two-tone (8L7) this SSR-G is set off by the factory scooped hood, rear spoiler, OEM rainguards, refinished OEM alloys, and an optional brushguard with oversized amber foglamps mounted atop it. Fresh off a recent service, this terrific truck is turn-key ready to rock, with a mere 126k verified and documented miles on the ticker. Capable, collective, and cool, this Japanese Classic would be the perfect daily driver, overland all-star, or a unique family hauler.
The cabin is designed with decent materials and includes several power amenities. It is also in above-average shape, starting with the durable and soft Moon Mist colored cloth. It lacks any major rips, stains, or tears and the driver benefits from adjustable lumbar support. The rear seats can fold into a flat loading floor if you need to maximize the cargo capacity. They also split-fold as well. Outward visibility is above average compared to newer SUVs with their high beltline and thick A-pillars. The dashboard lacks any cracking, fading, or distortion and houses standard dual front SRS airbags for those who may be safety conscious. The automatic climate control system is mounted in the middle of the center track and is simple to operate. It has the ability to blast cold air conditioning or piping hot heat at will. Adjacent is the Pioneer touchscreen audio system. Plug in a mini-disk or jam to the radio if you like, as the system operates as it should. Other electric niceties include power windows, door locks, power-folding side mirrors, and electric rear glass. In typical Toyota fashion, these all work like a charm, making daily use more enjoyable. The headliner and door cards are in good nick, as are the carpets aside from a few light stains. Even the owner's manual is on hand for the next owner and it's clear to see this cockpit was cared for in a prior life.
Under the sexy scooped hood sits a sizable intercooler mounted atop the legendary 1KZ-TE. This version of the engine makes more power and runs lower EGTs for those who may care about the three-liter's longevity. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the powerplant cranks to life care of two new 12v batteries. One of our trained techs has replaced the old leaky valve cover with a new one, and performed some additional maintenance to give the four-banger a slight refresh. A new engine air filter and new fuel filter have been installed to ensure optimal fuel economy and performance. The 1K is mated to a smooth shifting automatic that makes good use of this Surfs broad torque curve. For those who want to squeeze every bit of get up and go out of this five-seater, the selective transfercase allows 2WD functionality to maximize power and fuel economy. For mud, sand, and snow, a low-range 4WD and center locker can be deployed. The suspension is also a high point of this chassis design and was significantly revised from the prior generation. A new rear multi-link delivers predictable and comfortable ride quality over the tarmac and also maximizes off-road capability. New front wheel bearings were installed while it was in our shop and the ABS brakes were bolstered with new front pads and rotors. With the driveline and running gear all sorted the last thing to do was chuck on a new set of tires. The 31" Falkens that have been mounted and balanced at all four corners quiet down the ride and will deliver premium all-weather adhesion for tens of thousands of miles to come.
