Maintaining 25-year-old paint can be a bit of a chore, and for our off-road and overland crowd, the question is always when, not if the clearcoat is going to scratched or fail. Finished in a Cavalry Blue over Charcoal two-tone bedliner, this 1996 Surf may just be the answer to your off-road woes. The exterior is ready to smack around in the brush and endure rain, sleet, snow, and hail with little consequence. Set off by the little details, this Surf is adorned with a factory rear spoiler with a power under mirror, roof rack, spare tire carrier, and a set of black, refinished OEM alloys to complete the aesthetic. Even better, we've serviced the legendary 3.4L V6, which was utilized here in the majority of our stateside 4Runners. At only 118k verified and documented miles, this sweet SUV is barely broken in and turn-key. You can call this V6 Surf a lot of things, but one thing is for sure. This rugged SUV is nothing short of a true Japanese Classic and is as unique as they come!

Contrary to the vehicle's exterior aesthetic, the interior is neat, well-optioned, and was clearly well cared for in a prior life. The durable corduroy-esque fabric on the seats is still soft to the touch and shows no discernible defects outside of some expected age-related stains on the driver's bucket. Additionally, the rest of the interior upholstery is in fine shape, from the headliner to the matching inserts on the door cards. Sure there is some light staining to note, but that is typical of any gray interior. The dash is trimmed in a complementary grey vinyl, and outside of some notorious distortion around the passenger glove box area, the materials show well overall and have resisted any unwanted cracking or UV damage over the years. It should be noted that the standard dual SRS airbags found on these trucks add a level of reassurance for those who are safety conscious, as do the standard ABS brakes. The center stack houses upgraded JVC audio and an easy-to-use automatic climate control system. Simply flick the lever and Cold A/C or hot heat will puff out on demand. Power windows, power-folding mirrors, and power locks work as advertised and the rear glass drops down if you prefer a more open-air driving experience. It even has a functional sunroof. Unique to the N185 Surf model is the factory power rear under mirror, which you can unfurl when reversing to act as a primitive backup camera. A functional Field monitor relays the outside condition and direction of travel to the driver.  The rear bench is versatile, reclining slightly rearward if you need to catch some Z's in the back, while also having the ability to fold forward to maximize cargo space. The front seats are comfortable, too, and the driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and lumbar support which make longer trips much more manageable. Overall, there's not much to gripe about with this interior, and if you can see past some light stains on the carpet and a divot in the center console, this well-kept cockpit should serve you well in the future. We even have the Japanese owner's manual still on hand for the next owner to enjoy!

Stateside Toyota enthusiasts will already be familiar with the 5VZ-FE under the hood of this beast, which makes parts availability and ease of service a cakewalk. While it was up on the lift, our trained technicians gave this one a thorough once-over to ensure you'll be able to crank the key and enjoy this 3.4l for the road ahead. Starting with a new 12v battery, which was also installed to properly test the alternator, this one cranks over with ease and a new engine air filter and fuel filter keep any unwanted contaminants from entering the 3400cc mill. Acceleration up to highway speeds is impressive, as you'd expect, and the selective transfercase offers both high and low gearing as well as a deployable center locker should you need to escape from any sticky situations. The suspension soaks up road imperfections nicely, and we've replaced both front inner and outer tie rods as well as the steering rack bushings to get the handline up to spec. The brakes have been fully refreshed, with new pads and rotors up front and new drums and shoes in the rear. This super Surf stops on a dime and the freshly mounted and balanced Falken rubber will deliver plenty of grip for tens of thousands of fun-filled miles to come!
