The Hilux Surf is one of the toughest and most capable SUVs Japan has ever produced. These torquey turbo diesels are plenty powerful and fuel-efficient, making for the perfect year-round commuter thanks to its aggressive selectable 4x4 system. This 1997 SSR-X is a clean example, with a mere 209k verified and documented miles, and is finished in one-off Obsidian Black. The body and paint are in good shape aside from some light dings, chips, and scuffs associated with normal use. Set off by the OEM rain guards and color-matched OEM front brush bar this KZN185 looks just as good as it drives. In the midsize sport-utility market these diesel Toyotas can’t be beaten. Stylish, efficient, and fun on or off-road, this Hilux is recently serviced and ready to rock.

Inside the cabin, the interior is spacious and comfortable even by modern standards. Packed with an abundance of options from the factory, both driver and passengers are sure to enjoy long drives or local commutes. The dashboard lacks any cracking or lifting, and dual SRS airbags are standard, which add some reassurance when behind the adjustable tilt steering wheel. Dual SRS airbags are on hand up front for some added peace of mind when behind the wheel. The headliner, carpets, and door cards are in good condition lacking any notable sagging, stains, or tears, aside from light wear to the driver’s sun visor. The seats are finished in a dark blue corduroy material still soft to the touch, and free of any large rips or stains aside from a small tear on the driver-side seat bottom. The rear seats can be folded forward allowing for more storage. The easy-to-use upgraded Panasonic head unit is fully functional, emitting sound that is crisp and clear through the speakers with no distortion. Additionally, the driver also benefits from power windows, power locks, power mirrors, a power back glass, and a fully functioning climate control delivering cold A/C or hot heat on demand. If you prefer more natural ventilation, the power sunroof tilts and retracts at a moment's notice. One of the neatest features is the rear power under-mirror, which can unfurl with the press of a button. The rear bumper appears in the backup glass and can save a costly accident. At 25 years old this Surf has held up well, and the next owner will surely agree. Even the original carpeted floor mats, maintenance booklets, and owners manuals have survived, and are included in the sale!

Under the hood is a stout 1KZ-TE. This 3.0L is fresh off an oil and filter service and starts up, with the turn of the key or the push of a button, thanks to two new 12v batteries. With the addition of a brand-new valve cover gasket, the engine stays sealed idling with confidence, and is linked to a silky-smooth automatic transmission. The most expensive preventative maintained item was performed while in our shop, and this rig now touts a new timing belt and water pump, which will save the owner some coin down the road and will last for years to come. Fresh coolant was run through the 1KZ, as was a new thermostat, prior to heading down to her VA state safety inspection. The driver can select either 2WD or 4WD as needed, and if you find yourself in a sticky situation a center locking differential can get you out. While being very capable off-road the Hilux performs just as well at freeway speeds and around town. The suspension can handle any road imperfections thrown its way, easily soaking up bumps without jostling those around who are onboard. One of our trained technicians also refreshed the suspension by a new right rear wheel bearing, new inner and outer tie rods, and a new axle seal. While light and on point, the power-assisted steering is precise and has been aided by new steering rack bushings. The brakes are equally competent thanks to new front pads and rotors that were installed up on the lift. Five brand-new Falken tires were mounted and balanced which will last for thousands of miles to come, and deliver all the year-round grip required.
