The 180sx had a long production run in Japan. While production ceased in the US for the 240sx in 1994, the 180sx continued to be built and updated in Japan. In 1996 a face lift version was introduced known to enthusiasts as the kouki model. A redesigned front bumper, and a more modern set of tail lights were fitted to these models along with interior updates and a slew of optional parts. This 1996 180sx Type S is in fantastic condition inside and out with a mere 83k verified and documented miles it features the iconic kouki model front bumper, tail lights, and interior. The exterior is finished in Nissan's Super Black (KH3) paint and is in great shape aside from some minor dings and scuffs from use over the years. Notable repairs in Japan include a new tail light panel and the rear wing was removed at some point as well. This sporty and iconic 180sx is a collectible Japanese classic that you can actually enjoy driving.
Inside the cabin, you'll find all of the great updates that adorn the kouki 180sx. The seats are most noticeable, with the 180sx print down the front seats and rear seats trimmed to match. They are all in great condition showing just slight wear to the bolsters and no rips, or tears. A driver's front SRS airbag is another update the late models received giving the driver an added element of safety. The dash is in shockingly good condition with no cracks or major UV damage to note. The door panels follow suit showing no major wear or rips to note. Those who know the 180sx will notice that the window switches are also updated for the kouki model and resemble those found on the S15. The digital automatic climate control is located in the center of the dash and works properly allowing the passengers to set their desired temperature and let the car do the rest. Both the heat and A/C function properly. The carpets are in great condition showing no rips or major stains, and the headliner above is nice as well with no sagging. All of the interior trim is present in the hatch, which can be difficult to find these days. There is even an OEM optional keyless entry fob that still functions and is included. This exceptionally clean interior was clearly cared for by the previous owner!
Powering this 180sx Type S is the SR20DE. While not as popular as its turbocharged big brother, the 4 cylinder provides plenty of oomph to get you where you need to go and have a good time getting there. Startups are quick thanks to a new 12v battery and a fresh oil and filter change along with new serpentine belts ensure trouble free ownership until the next scheduled maintenance interval. Acceleration feels good and even better shifts are performed through a 5 speed transmission. While this vehicle originally left the factory as an automatic, it was swapped in Japan using all OEM parts save for the shifter which was upgraded to a Tomei short shifter. Shifts are direct and there are no grinds. The clutch feels OEM and shows no signs of slipping. The suspension is adequate and soaks up even the largest bumps while still performing well during spirited driving. A new engine air filter was installed to keep fresh air fed to the engine and our trained technicians also replaced the transmission output seal to prevent any future leaks. Lastly, 4 brand new tires were installed which provide a nice quiet ride and will last for years to come.
